Whenever he is forced back, his instant decision is to hunker up, practically dive on the ball and hope he can buy a freekick. It's an awful trait to have, he's really poor at using his body to shield the ball, arguably his worst attribute yet that's his go to plan whenever he's put under any pressure, makes zero sense.

So many basics to his game that needed working on since his debut and still need working on just as much 3 years later.

I've said for over a year, but not sure what his position is or what he will be.
Not a right back (started the season well to be fair but got found out big time) and he's definitely not a midfielder.

At crazy amount of acamdy players that shining all over the Europe, we decide to keep him, how? Just damn how, is there any reasonable explanation
Because Pep saw those guys in training mate, haven't you heard ?

OK he hasn't been great and I am not his biggest fan but our so called big game players keep shitting the bed and it looks like Lewis gets the blame for it all.
No mate, he has to take account of his own ability. He's been poor this season and he's played enough to become more savvy through experience. Truth is he's not good enough to be playing in big games at our level.

Apparently wright and O’Reilly can’t turn as elegant that’s why.

he aint a defender. never will be with his build. no defender instincts at all and positioning also lacking. you dont want to see him vs a quick winger.

he could do a role in games vs Soton, Ipswich where we dominate most of the game etc and most easier cup games as a rotational role. but thats about it for now.

much sooner throwing him on instead of KDB then as a left back...

You have summarised my main gripe with him far better than I have ever been able to. I don’t understand this falling on the ball tactic.. is it due to a lack of ability? If so he shouldn’t be playing. I don’t see other players doing it 9 out of 10 times they receive the ball.

I can't believe how many comments are in this thread. We've watched our 90M defender in Gvardiol shit the bed all season and have gotten fewer comments than just tonight in here.

The ball went off the crossbar directly to his man, who shot it the first time; there was nothing he or Ederson could have done differently. There are far bigger issues than Rico Lewis occasionally playing at full-back, for fuck sake.

That's bluemoon for you

I think it’s a panic thing. In possession, he is an extremely limited footballer and when his easy 5 yard pass backwards isn’t available and he finds himself under pressure, he shits himself and goes into this frozen state. He’s like one of those dogs that have seizures and just fall over.

Yep. So he shouldn’t be playing. Simple.

I have absolutely no insight here so it's very possibly bullshit but in my opinion it probably comes from him being tiny and his MMA background. It was probably a useful trait in the youth league's to help deal with the size differences.

it's an easy go to defensive move for him, he doesn't have the required physicality to withstand any touch tight pressure, doesn't have the speed or agility or quick feet to out maneuver his opponent and so there's not really any other option for him.

You'd think it would be something that would be coached out of him by now though, there's no way pep cannot see it or doesnt see it as a problem so why is it still so prominent in his game?

When he's coming through the youth setups it is fine, you assume players will grow, learn to handle themselves and naturally drop it but he hasn't grown and hasn't found a way to cope with his physical disadvantage so he reverts back to this.

It's his biggest problem by far, it should be a simple fix with a bit of coaching but that would have been true 3 years ago too and yet it's not happened. Got to start improving now, there's no hope that he's going to get a late growth spurt anymore this is him and he needs to find better ways to compensate.
