82 | Rico Lewis - 2025/26

You lot do realise he's 20? Most of the players in our squad weren't good enough to start for City when they were 20.

Ederson, Dias, Reijnders, Stones, Ake, Bernardo, Marmoush, Kovacic, Gonzalez, Rodri, Ait Nouri, Akanji....Go back a few years and KDB, Silva, Mahrez, Walker also fall into that camp.

So why are you expecting more from him than all of them?

Why is it half the forum think the only options are "shit" or "good enough"?

He's starting more than he should be right now because of injuries and squad turnover, but he wouldn't have played 100 games for City at such a young age if he was shit. Giving him a new contract doesn't mean he's contractually got to start every game, I don't see why any City fan wouldn't want to keep him and see where he progresses to in the next 4/5 years *especially* given he's a local lad and lifelong fan. I'm not convinced full back is his position, but I also am not so closed-minded I think a player can't learn "defensive nous" or improve after age 19.
Nothing else need be said on the matter, this sums it up perfectly.

Rico can be a very good squad player like Zinchenko was. He’s a smart player and versatile but will never be the highest level. Nunez is a similar standard but is faster.

Not just that Nunes has an understanding of how to assist the strikers.

Last season we didn't get top 5 because of KDB saving us.. we got it because Pep trusted Nunes to provide assists from RB acting like a mini kdb..

He actually put up better numbers than Cancelo ever did for us.

I don't necessarily blame him for anything, but you can't shake the feeling that as soon as he's on the pitch, the team completely loses its defensive shape and stability, giant gaps start popping up and situations where you are thinking "How does this happen? There should be a player here" happen with increasing frequency

It's not just us fans who see it - Joe Hart when asked on the BBC what are the problems defensively highlighted how Rico, saw the danger and completely ignored it. This left Stones in a panic and as a result we lost the game. This is a too common thread with Lewis & until he stops these brain farts that puts his teammates in strife he will get plenty of people saying he's a problem. Fixable, yes just be disciplined and don't always go for the glamour of charging forward without consequence.

Until he realises that we will have problems trying to keep a clean sheet - fact..He has the talent but his smarts are lacking.

He is a quality young player, IMO.
Every individual functions better in a functioning whole, and we haven't had that for a while.
I recall so many here pleading with him to be given Kyle Walker's role in 23/24 because of how good he was.
We are going to have to learn to be patient because we have a very young team now.
