I don't think McAtee has played enough to show high level performances and it's almost impossible for him to when he plays so infrequently. Sporodic first team minutes will do any youngster more harm than good.
It is a vicious circle. If he did show early Foden levels he would get trusted more. Same with Palmer. Foden was eased in but did score in the Premier League from near enough the get go.

Grealish isn't versatile either.
Grealish was a very versatile player at Villa playing every position (except striker) on the field. He played in 2 different positions very well for England just 2 months ago. Pep even acknowledged about it himself.

James McAtee is also a versatile player he can play on the wing in the midfield and even as a false 9 under different managers in England underage group and at other PL clubs.

Cole Paler can play 10 and right wing and occasionally left wing as well.

It is just Pep refused to use them in a more versatile way. He clearly does not fancy to do what other coaches have already proven. He would rather to train a full back into a midfielder than using a midfielder in the midfield it will be too easy for him. If he wins he is the most brilliant coach in the world. But if he loses well then...

Foden was shown more patience and got more minutes when he was breaking through, all players are different though and play in different circumstances. Take Delap for example, he scored on his first team debut, played well a couple of times and showed promise, then he got injured. When he recovered loaned him out and he struggled to impress at Stoke Preston and Hull due to niggling injuries and fits and starts appearances. We decided to sell him to Ipswich and he's beginning to show his academy promise through being being given a run and he's thriving, and good on him. We may even trigger the buy back clause if he continues to thrive, we'll see.

I think McAtee will have to leave to another championship club to have a chance of progressing because he needs more time to find his feet.

As good as Pep is he makes mistakes and he'll continue to make mistakes. Not made any big mistakes though.

Delap struggled in the Premier League games whilst at club. Especially the game vs Leicester which near enough ended his City career.

We haven’t seen anything from him to believe in. Hes only got a name because of stuff he did years ago in the academy. When he does get mins on the pitch, its all very meh. People are crying out for him to start, based on nothing.

Based on nothing? Maybe on the fact that Txiki and Pep saw fit to recall him and give him a slot in the first team squad. Why would they want to waste a squad place on someone with allegedly no talent?

And also based on the fact that there’s a rash of injuries and loss of form throughout the squad, such that some posters feel there’s little to lose.

Fact is we don’t know if he’s any good because we’ve seen so little of him.

That said, I admit he hardly advanced his case tonight so I guess he’ll be back in the wilderness until sold. Bit of a shame really. We are excellent at developing youngsters to saleable standard but pretty shit at growing them into City players.

Pep doesn't trust inexperienced players because off the fear of jeapordy that inexperience brings. This current situation is prime time to roll the dice and see what our youthful academy players can give to the team. I see this season as an experiment because we're at the cusp of being in transition and it's up to Pep build another squad, and a part of building another squad is to succeed in intergrating youngsters into the first team as seamlessly as possible.
I don’t think we are in experimental time yet. Every game still crucially matters for EPL title and UCL trophy.

Surely you mean a chance to win the UCL trophy next season by getting a place of front 4. With this form city won't get out of the group.

I really want him to do well but he just isn't taking his chances at the minute. Last night he was poor
And thats gonna have to be on him.

At the end of the day, we can rate some of these youth players all we want, but if they dont grab these opportunities by the rough of the neck and truly show they belong... well thats that then.

My issue is always the lack of opportunities though - those were McAtee’s first minutes in a month. And he might easily not play again for another month. It’s virtually impossible to play once a month (usually out of position) and impress. It was the same with Palmer two seasons ago and Bobb last season. And yet the likes of Doku and Savinho both went straight into the team as soon as we signed them and have played numerous matches in their preferred position. It’s frustrating that Pep treats academy players different to players we’ve signed, even when Bobb and Palmer are arguably better players than Doku and Savinho.

I agree it's a bit frustrating how Pep deals with our youth players. We could surely have given them more minutes in easier games and then you're not dropping the likes of Simpson Pusey in after a bunch of injuries and a 5 losses streak where he's obviously going to struggle.

What I would say though is Palmer and Bobb actually looked like they made stuff happen and showed a lot more quality in limited chances than mcatee. He's unfortunately shown nothing really and doesn't try to grab the game.

Well no first season benefit? Or that is restricted to only few favourites?
Fair enough. I do get frustrated how he isn't given a good run but understand Peps trying to play Foden into form.
Thought james looked really nervous against Feyenord and kept making bad simple mistakes. He wasn't the worst in the side by any means, just commenting on him in particular because I want him to do well.
He's obviously got the ability and traits if he is the England captain. Sunday would be great timing for him to come on and turn it on

No surprise McAtee was nervous when he came on. Not easy for him to try and impress when team morale is low. To keep in Pep's plans he needs to come and be a game changer like score a dying seconds(like Bobb) winner or even an assist. Young James will have to be patient when he next gets a chance but he must play well for any chance of getting regular footbal.

I agree.

He is being dealt a shit hand a bit.

I would have even preferred he came on for Bernie on the RW spot rather than the middle in Gundogans spot.

But he is being dealt this hand, and he simply MUST make the most of it.

That's how life works sometimes. Palmer and Bobb barely played as you said, but STILL impressed, that's how City fans and Pep knew that Bobb was the one, even with limited minutes.

God I miss Bobb... fuck that injury...
