87 | James McAtee - 2024/25

Not good enough, similar to all the other academy players that we have.

We sell the best ones for decent money, and keep the ones that no one really wants.

Mcatee was fairly average at Sheff United so not sure why anyone thinks he'll be any better now.

The fact none of the ones we've got actually get a game says it all really.

Then he shouldn't have been kept in the squad in the summer. Same with O'Reilly. You can't carry a small squad for harmony reasons and make it smaller by having 0 trust in a few of the players in it.

he now needs to be careful and not get an injury before the Salford game in the cup. thats his last chance this season if he really plays well even scoring or assisting, that may changes Pep's view on him. if he plays shit in that game then he is dead for Pep.
but would not surprise me either if he is just a sub in that game as well and Pep goes with Bernardo, Gundo, Lewis who are overplayed as hell already.

When he can't get in this team, at this point in time, you have to wonder if he ever will become established as a regular performer for us. He has to be a better long term option than Gundogan. I was delighted when Ilkay came back, but let's be honest. His legs have gone at this stage.

As someone suggested elsewhere on here, he's either awful in training, or everyone else is like prime Messi.

It's unbelievable that he's not been given a chance in this situation.

He should walk away from the club in January. He's wasting his career staying here.

Is that not ridiculous though? You don’t play any football at all for two months and then when you are thrown in your expected to be the best player on the pitch.

Yet Gundogan who’s been shocking is continually picked every game

Obviously I'm not comparing him to Harry Kane as a footballer.

But I want to make this point about his situation:

Kane did not light up any of his loan spells as a young footballer.

He got some game time at Tottenham in the first team under Tim Sherwood because club record signing Soldado was misfiring and Sherwood played 4-4-2 so he needed a partner to do the running for Adebayor (who was playing well).

Pochettino took over and wanted to reduce the age of the squad and that meant pushing out Adebayor. Soldado kept misfiring as a lone striker so Kane got his chance up top as the main man and never looked back.

He was 21 years old by then. It took some courage to replace two senior strikers, one who was the record transfer, to give Kane a shot but it worked wonders.

No one predicted it. He was not considered a wonderkid. But Spurs took the gamble that this player from the academy can do a job when a senior player was severely underperforming.

City need to take that gamble. Otherwise what is the point of our academy.
