Have to agree with Pep. Some on here get carried away too easily after a 2nd half hattrick against a 2nd division side that was already knocked down, or a great move that led to a 2nd goal at Leicester

If the time is right, JM will start and can prove himself to be a consistent starter. I sincerely hope he makes it. And I think he can.

Me too. I've been accused of having a grudge against this kid but I didn't think he'd make it.

Now maybe I think he may just make it because he's got a knack for goals and that's something most of our other 1st teamers don't.. but it depends on him if he's willing to follow Pep's plan and sign a new contract.. or he's willing to gamble on a career elsewhere.

Big decision for him coming up. And if he doesn't sign an extension.. I think he goes now or in the summer.

Hattrick aside he was poor. Miles off a starting spot.
Miles off is a bit of an exaggeration. Scoring a hattrick and being ‘poor’ isn’t that bad either.

Does he need to score a hattrick and play amazing each game to get a chance?

The expectation levels for young players are ridiculous. He scored three brilliant goals and got into great positions, something we haven’t really seen from any of our starting players

Mabe miles off a starting spot if everyone is fully fit and on the top of their game but he has to be better than players who are either unfit, off form or carrying an injury.
Modern day football is a squad game
Better than Nunes imho

A little like Kev, who would misplace those simple passes but was dangerous in the box or do a wonder pass.

McAtee shouldnt be an 8, he should play a role similar to Kev, closer to edge of box.
It seemed deliberate that he was further forward second half

Made up for this lad.
Love nothing more than a Manc blue making it in our team.
Imagine hiw he felt when he scored.
My mates a blade said he's quality.
Bit light .
But very good feet.
Ctid

Yeah pisses me off lads out of youth team get less chance than players we have signed.
But who am I to argue with pep.
If I did.
I'd tell him the only thing that pisses me off is he doesn't play the kids more.
I'd rather win nothing for a couple of years if it meant these lads got a proper chance.

Better than Nunes imho
I think the exact opposite. Nunes continues to drive forward when there's space in front of him, make very good passes and have a part in goals.

The only thing wrong with Nunes in my opinion is that he gets lost in a overpopulated attacking position and isn't given the ball often enough.

I think he is one our best players (as is Grealish when not wasted out on a wing).

McAfee seemed to have very low confidence for much of the game but finished strongly. He could be very good and should have been played more over the past months but we still don't know his potential.

I am convinced of Nunes' potential. I just hope Pep does too.

Yeah he wasn’t good in the first half, to the point where I thought Pep might have taken him off at half time. The game was just passing him by like a few of his other starts for us.

Maybe Pep had a word with him at half time?

He was miles more active in the second half. You work harder, you put yourself in good positions and the preparation meets the opportunities. That’s what people call ‘luck’ but there’s no such thing as luck, it’s just hard work.

He needs to be busy like that second half today, ongoing.

I think he just stopped dropping in the 2nd half.

He let the other players take that role and he focused on trying to score.

Look at all 3 goals, didnt bother with build up, just on finding good space in the box to score.

I thought first half him and Grealish should have switched roles, Grealish was like the floating 10 and McAtee played like an 8.

Then Grealish went LW, Foden came on, and McAtee realized he didnt need to drop, Foden was already doing it, and helping the build up.

I think it’s worth noting that was his first start in over 10 weeks. I know he had a good cameo against Leicester, but it still must be difficult to come in to a starting line up after so long and immediately be back up to speed and in perfect rhythm.

You could almost feel a weight lifted off his shoulders when he scored the first goal.

Once that went in his entire game turned around completely, and we were able to appreciate his true talents. As Pep has said, Macca was the captain of our elite academy team which included Palmer, Rogers and many more brilliant young players.

Each player develops at their own rate. Once James truly believes in himself, you can tell that he will belong in our squad in the long term.

Congratulations James on a great performance!

Like Palmer I can’t see him staying because he won’t get enough games for his age. I think Palmer was a better player than McAtee when he left but had no idea he was as good as he is because we didn’t see enough of him. Hope we don’t repeat the mistake but can’t blame him if he chooses playing over staying

I think there is a great player in McAtee but my opinion is he will have to leave to get more time playing any other team outside top 4 arsenal Chelsea city Liverpool I think he get in rest of teams

As the poster above says, is that because he hasn’t started a game in 10 weeks? It’s difficult for any player to show consistency or form when you don’t play at all

It's just confidence. Always has been. These players are making it through our academy and onto the fringes of the best club in England for a reason.

We'd be mad to sell him. Just like we were mad to keep him on the bench when everyone in the team looked like shit for months. And we'll be mad when we replace him with a similarly aged, less talented kid from another country.

City being mad is a big reason why I love this club. But sometimes it fucking sucks.

Does not press well bit like Foden, his passing isn't great that's his negatives! What he does well is all around the pen area he does see a pass around the pen his runs into then area and finishing is very good! Thing is who is he going to replace in around the side anytime soon? He is 22/23 will be happy to sit on the bench for the next 3/5 years being a bit time player?

Personally think he will be sold for 25/30m with a sell on and a buyback and that would be for the best for McAteer..
