#9 | Gabriel Jesus - 2020/21 Performances

Those calling out Jesus can pretty much be written off as knowing nothing about the game they spend so much time watching. Jesus is not playing as an out and out number 9 for us. He is playing the most incredibly selfless role and he’s doing it brilliantly, without complaint. You will find him deep, you will find him left, you will find him right. Very rarely will you find him in the box during our probing phase. And that’s for good reason. He is dragging them all over the place and is making the very space that Gundogan is killing teams with. That’s in possession. Out of it, he is incredible at putting them under pressure, at legging it to get back goal side if he finds himself deeper than the likes of Gundogan or Bernardo, he is more than happy to fill in and help stop a counter, and is smart enough to spot immediately when he needs to do it. The guy is invaluable to us and the way we are currently playing.

That’s true but I’m glad they don’t have a world class striker like Kane who can link the play whilst also scoring a shitload.

Add to that how professional he has been when playing second fiddle to Sergio for the last few years (which in truth he has), it would have been easy for him to sulk or ask for a move. Of course there are aspects of his game he can improve but he is a fantastically talented player with a wonderful attitude so I have no reason to think he can't or won't do that. Having a player of his quality and attitude in the squad must be a delight for Pep.

Jesus is obviously a net plus to our side. He's very gifted and frequently contributes towards our success.

He is not, however, anywhere close to being a first choice striker in a top club wishing to challenge for the Champion's League.

I get what you mean, but at this moment (Aguero pending) he is the 1st choice striker for a team very much looking like it could challenge on all fronts.

I hope that Jesus is in our squad for the next few years.

At the same time, I very much hope that we sign Haaland. That's the priority one signing for us next window bar none, IMO.

And we may well sign Messi too - my favorite player of all time and probably still the world number one best footballer even now.

Should we sign both Haaland and Messi - what's Jesus to do? Assuming that we don't move him on under these circumstances - how many minutes in important games will he get?

Eh... Liverpool practically plays with 3 strikers up top, Mane, Firmino and Salah. It's a very top heavy tactic. In a frontline (nowadays a front 3), there has to be 'goalscorers', and there has to be 'providers'. When we had Sane, Aguero, Sterling, Sane was the 'provider' while Aguero/Sterling are the 'goalscorers'. For a front 3 to be fluid and logical, they have to complement each other. It's the same concept as employing a front 2. 1 guy links, the other poaches.

Take the Rags for example. Martial, Cavani, Rashford. None of them are 'provider' types, thus they struggle for creativity when Fernandes is not involved. When you play with 3 attackers up top, someone/something's gotta give.

For Mane & Salah to put in the numbers they did, one of them has to sacrifice the goalscoring numbers and work hard for the others, and that's Firmino. Thus, when Firmino plays poorly, the other 2 doesn't score as much, more-so when their midfielders are providing the creativity. Firmino is as classic as a false 9 gets, he presses, he drop deeps, he links up and creates space.

I humbly reject that notion. You can work hard and be a team player whilst also getting goals. The problem firmino and jesus have is that they are poor finishers.

I don't think poor is the word you are looking for wrt Jesus's finishing ability as recent goals will show.

You might think he is not a predator, but poor is simply not true

Really? Recent goals have showcasted, in your opinion, an elite level of finishing? Other than the one against Swansea which was truly fantastic play from him and I will give him that, I seem to remember them mostly being tap-ins that he nearly fumbled.

Yes, really. The truly fantastic one as you say, shows he isn't a poor finisher I. E. he has great skills wrt finishing.

I think he doesn't take a lot of half opportunities because his confidence is a bit low. Quite often you'll see him get a half chance and he'll choose to keep the move alive and pass rather than shoot. Which is good most of the time for the team, but if he just went for it, he'd score some great goals.

One day soon things will click for him. He'll get the right balance between helping the side and goal scoring and he'll score a bunch. After that he'll just get on a roll he never looks back from.

Again, I understand your point, but it really does nothing to dismiss the idea that Jesus isn't good enough. All your saying is that others may be better.

I think about Bernardo right now. Is he good enough for a big club with big ambitions? I'd say a big yes. But there's a very realistic chance that when KDB returns to full fitness Bernardo is the one that will miss out in the 'strongest XI'. Does that mean Bernardo is no longer good enough?

Funnily enough, KDB to Bernardo is similar to Aguero to Jesus. One is an unbelievably world class direct threat on goal, the other is a very good one but whose strengths lie more predominantly in getting the best out of others. Importantly for City under Pep, both work.
