9 years ago today: Welcome Pep & a New Badge

I took photos of the new badge on Boxing Day 2015 as I walked down Joe Mercer Way towards Briscoe Lane.
So your memory is still doing ok Jim.

It was intended as a nod to our blue moon anthem, but it was a good idea to remove the silhouette of a City fan standing alone.

I am still puzzled as to why we have the 1894 on the badge ? Shouldn't it be 2008 the year we were formed?

A reminder, however tangentially, of how shit the club was run back in the day. Our centenary season (1994) passed with barely a murmur; some half-arsed badge that was unavailable on replica kits, kind of shit Fred Perry-inspired leaf thing IIRC.

That said, I still think we criminally underplayed, undersold both the 2012 league victory and the centurion season.

A lot gets lost to me these day, but I do remember, with the current badge,
season ticket holders at the time chose what we wanted the new badge to look like,it was via
the cityzens website or emails, they gave you options to chose, like did you want the 3 rivers of manchester on the badge etc.
Pretty sure you could also do it at the ground near the ticket office

9 years ago today… Hello Pep and a new badge (follow the link):

Have you written anything about how our badge has evolved? Particularly early history of it.

Also who added the Ship Canal to their badge first City or United?

There was a whole series of consultation activities, including a series of talks that I presented that were free to attend. I went into the history of every element and some aspects, such as the history of the red rose on the badge, were explained in detail. Other Manchester logos, symbols etc such as the bee, were also included and fans were able to say what elements they wanted. It was the most detailed and involved badge consultation any club had ever performed.

Are there any versions that nearly made the cut?

The fact that ‘City’ at the bottom of the badge isn’t curved and is straight makes my ‘design/marketing’ teeth grind.

I did a series of presentations on the badge and wrote articles for those on how the badge evolved. Much of the material on its history at the consultation came from the material I did. Maybe I could write an article for www.GHFootballArchive.com soon?

On the ship - it’s not about the ship canal. That’s often assumed but the ship on Manchester’s COA predates the ship canal. It represents Manchester’s trading links and points the way it does (to USA) to represent global trade.

As City were ‘Manchester’ before Utd they used the COA before Utd. As for the club’s own badges, City started using a round badge, which included the ship, in the 1930s. Utd started using their own badge in 1940s with the ship on.
