A thread about protesters

What are they pissed off at?
Anything.... Everything.... Nothing.
Today was a march against new legislation that will make it harder to hold protests. Depending on who you vote for/believe, it is needed or it is akin to a police state. The truth is somewhere in between but why let that get in the way of rioting

They are introducing the bill to ban protests through the back door, so tomorrow when they start privatising NHS or invading another country or whatever and you try to go out protesting, they can arrest you on some broadly written bill.

indeed. So if people are legitimately angry and concerned about this ... and peaceful protests get ignored and fall on deaf eyes and this bill goes through ..

what do people propose they should do ?

Yep, it plays directly into their hands.

I really do worry about the next few years and where all of this will end up. It’s getting to the point where it shouldn’t matter what side of the political spectrum people are on, we have to get this government out.

This is all going to get a shedload messier before it gets better and we need to get back to having a government (and a populace) that realises they exist for people that didn’t vote for them as much as for people that did. We need to find some semblance of unity and quickly, which is never going to happen when the incumbents are using the exact opposite of it as their main tool.

Until we get back to reinforcing the middle ground (which is dwindling more and more), the fire will keep getting stoked and there will be idiots that react and play completely into what they want.

Those who condemned the protestors last week are largely silent this week, and vice-versa. It’s probably why we’re so fucked as a society at the moment. Almost every issue now seems to be polarised on cultural lines, and we’re all guilty of it to some extent.

I was just thinking this as I scrolled through. Some very notable absences.

Sadly there seems to be some confusion between police enforcing existing legislation and the proposed new / extension of legislation. This has resulted in a general brainless anti-police protest and the very legitimate concern about temporary / emergency pandemic related powers getting extended being lost among general anti-establishment nonsense. Those the protesters most hate/fear will be most pleased. :-(

Does having Riot police in the area when there were peaceful crowds during daylight aggravate or calm down the situation?

It would have made more sense to bring in fencing and block off the area around Bridewell police station.

Bristol has a significant population of "radicals" - the more extreme of these have been involved in fire bombing a Tesco in 2011 and burning down part of the the police Firearms centre in 2013. Riot police are just a target or prize for the nutters from the People's Republic of Stokes Croft.
