Whilst the phrase members of the public is very broad, mine interpretation is very different from yours.

My definition of ‘members of the public’ includes everyone, even ones I don’t like.

The police are not there to twat people standing in the street, or punch young women in the face, albeit it is better than murdering them or posing for selfies next to dead women. #smallmercies

I’m extremely uneasy about any legislation that gives police arbitrary powers to decide which protests can go ahead and which can’t, tbh. Anyone who cares about democracy should have concerns about the way this bill was rushed through.

Impossible to tell. Had they dispersed as reasonably requested, then that wouldn't have happened. More fool the idiot who got pushed like that.

As if they are enjoying that? Get real. They have better things to be doing than that, like their proper jobs. They will have been pulled off their shifts responding to calls and dealing with their workloads. This means that victims of crime and people that need help wont be getting any. It means villains can go out and commit crime because all the police are dealing with these twats. It means that days off will have been cancelled, and they will have been prevented from knocking off on time. This means that that they work long hours which means that they are knackered and no good tomorrow. It means that bobbies left on shift are depleted and so they are knackered, and the overall effectiveness of what they can do for communities is reduced. No good comes of this, and nobody will be enjoying it. I can assure you of that. Silly, thoughtless and very inaccurate post.

Well, you argument that we aren’t going to lose our rights to any protest barely made it to your second paragraph.

Rubbish.

It's completely disingenuous to suggest that we'll lose all our rights to protest as a result of these powers. OF COURSE people will still be able to protest. *Sometimes* a protest may get dispersed which without these powers, would not be able to be dispersed. It's hardly the end of the world. The powers are intended to help the police control situations which are causing unreasonable public disturbance, risk to the general public or which may get out of hand. How can you object to that?

And @Ric: I forgot to add, although the bill does not give the police arbitrary powers, so what if it did? Do you regard them as the enemy, a body with a political agenda who will abuse its power for nefarious ends? I don't. I think they try to stop crime, prevent criminals and criminal activity and protect the public.

For people who do not enjoy assaulting members of the public, they do seem to do rather a lot of it.

Funnily enough, as a law-abiding citizen, someone who actually listens to a police officer if they ask me reasonably to do something, I have never been assaulted by the police. Do you find that strange?

What I find strange - utterly bizarre actually - is that you seem to be taking the side of those out protesting, late at night, in contravention of lockdown rules, who find themselves on the end of rough handling from the police after they have refused all reasonable requests to move.

What do people have to do, in order for you to take the side of the police?

I was once on a coach going to an away match a lad in front was bullying? teasing? the bloke in front. Nicking his scarf, slagging him off etc. The bloke kept asking him to stop but he didn't, eventually the guy in front turned round and punched him simply saying perhaps now you'll stop. For the next hour the lad did nothing but whinge to me, it wasn't right etc.
Perhaps the police are like this guy, they get pushed so far and then think, fuck it.

Ah, I love the sound of people excusing violent behaviour by the boys in blue. Several points. This isn’t about one side over the other, this is about not giving one side a free pass every time violence breaks out or believing the police when they give their side of the story because they invariably lie.

It happens every time there is violent disorder. There is a peaceful protest, then night falls and then the police start insisting people disperse, then there is pushing and, oh look, its kicked off. Next day, the faithful media report how our poor brave officers took the brunt of an vicious assault blah, blah and more often than not it’s bollocks to cover up the police part in provoking the violence.

Instead of this knee jerk, ‘let’s smash protestors skulls’ and cheering at a woman getting punched in the face or three or four officers laying into a guy on the ground with batons, why not try some critical and objective thinking about the situation rather than blindly swallowing the one sided narrative the authorities publish?

The media also need to start treating police claims with scepticism because in the age of cell phones we can actually see for ourselves, assuming that is we want to see.

The police are trained so they do not react like a bloke on a fucking bus getting teased. They are professionals, and professionals who are sometimes armed, and call me old fashioned I don’t think we should be arming people who are prone to reacting violently when it gets a bit fractious.
