Before the Arndale was bombed there was a pub opposite M & S. It was where the WH Smith sign is in this pic. Can anyone remember it's name? I remember it snowing in town near Christmas years ago and I met a mate in there early doors after work. I walked in freezing cold and 'Fairytale of New York' was playing on the jukebox. It was filled with smoke and warmth and it's something I'll always remember. I seem to think it was something like 'The Prince of Wales' but that doesn't seem right. Can anyboby help?

The Isaac Newton mate.
Cheers fella - I know you're right but I'd never have got it - it's been bugging me recently cos I've been working nearby.

I remember it opening and I'm sure it was The Isaac Newton.

Does anybody remember 'The Old Reekie' near to Boots at the bottom end of Market Street? Wonder what happened to that.

Was a sad loss was Tommy Ducks. Full of characters that place. I remember spending a Friday afternoon in there that carried on into Saturday. I was 18 and thought I was about 50. Happy days.

Yeah it's the same place. It was 'The Auld Reekie' and then became 'The Sportsman'. As you walked down Market Street from Piccadilly it was on your left hand side and you went downstairs to it. They did a cracking pint of Tartan Bitter in there.

We'd start in there and then go up to The John Bull on Brown Street or The Shakespeare behind Lewis's. Thats the only one thats still there now.

Same place used to go there after work in the early 70's. Halfway down Market St where Tesco's is next to JJB Sports.

Now then who remembers the Cromford Club and Stax hairdressers just off Market St, then obviously the Underground Market
