Anybody remember the woolworths fire?

Yep and if i am not mistaken there was another two around the same time where people were killed. Mother Macs and a sweat shop in one of the buildings off London Road.

who remembers wimpy at the bottom of market street loved it in there when i was a kid, it was my reward for being good after gettin dragged round town with the old queen.

I remember the guy who dressed as Mr Wimpy having his fat old arse rolled round Market St by the punks that used to stand outside drinking cider. Because his costume was so 'round', he couldn't stand up. He was begging them for mercy.

Happy days.

Yes, I remember them both. How about Pips/Thursdays (can't remember which way round) on Fennel Street?

Next to the cathedral on the corner. Also reminds me of placemate 7 on whitworth street which is now a gay club

Another view of Piccadilly Gardens circa 1979 - looks nice during the day but was less pleasant at night

Anyone remember The Bossa Nova Club near Victoria train station. It had the steepest stairs in Manchester and we used to fall down them every weekend bladdered. It was run by a black guy called Chico and was a proper shitole but had strippers and some very scary blokes. Used to get grub over the road at The Bongo Diners with all the bus drivers and hookers then off to the Bossa. Think it ended up as The Black Cat Club. Also the Henry the eighth bar on Oxford Rd with The Continental bar downstairs. Came out of the Apollo deaf after watching Motorhead on their Bomber Tour and went in the Continental for some ballooning with the punks, happy days!!

Found a pic of Chicos Bossa Nova

Can't believe its so hard to find photo's of the city centre in the late 80's and early 90's. There used to be a McDonalds next to the big HMV. A John Lewis. Warner Bros store was a bit later. Fish Market. Tiny City souveneir shop.

Before the Arndale was bombed there was a pub opposite M & S. It was where the WH Smith sign is in this pic. Can anyone remember it's name? I remember it snowing in town near Christmas years ago and I met a mate in there early doors after work. I walked in freezing cold and 'Fairytale of New York' was playing on the jukebox. It was filled with smoke and warmth and it's something I'll always remember. I seem to think it was something like 'The Prince of Wales' but that doesn't seem right. Can anyboby help?
seftons mate then it changed to the rat and carrot...

Those pics bring back some memories. The underground market (great stall there selling hard to get records; picture discs, demos, signed albums), HMV having a pokey little shop up some stairs (where JJB sports is now?), before moving down to where Boots is now (or was that Virgin?). Robinson's Records on Blackfriar's Street. Piccadilly Gardens always being full of winos. Paperchase in St Anne's Square (great place for posters). Getting the 50 bus in from Longsight every saturday morning.
