A380

The cracks found are around 1cm, that's the scale we are talking and why they pose no immediate safety risk.

A lot of it seems to be down to the manfuacturing process and the alloy used but a fix has been found and is being applied.

It annoys me a lot that they are referencing the Qantas 'explosion' which was totally unrelated and caused by an oil leak from an engine supplied by someone else. That issue has also been fixed and applies to only a couple of A380 operators.

Here's where the cracks are being found!

Two different types of crack have been found. The first were not so bad but the second will require a change in material and manufacturing process. I heard a rumour that some airlines are looking at possible groundings.

To add some balance the 787 composite fuselage is causing problems too. This time it's de-lamination caused by imprecise manufacturing.

Bloody airline business. Falling apart!!

To paraphrase Peter Kay (I know it's embarrassing) ...

It's not the cracks that should scare you, it's the poster above you ;)

If anything it confirms how safe flying is. They check the planes so regularly that they found these problems. If only other modes of transport were checked as frequently and thoroughly.

However, I would think twice about boarding an A380 for the moment until the problems were ironed out. Not that I think that these things are going to fall out the sky tomorrow, I'd probably just be wary of it.

Flying isnt scary

Faliing out of the sky at 800 miles an hour with 2000 tons of plane behind you heading towards an immovable object (The Earth) is when you should start worrying

minor things. Thankfully found before anything major happens. Sadly in the world of instant media it will create a lot of scare mongering.

Still would love to fly on 1 of these and marvel at some great engineering. Lets hope it doesn't get out of hand. The grounding of Concorde sent us back decades.
