The problems with cracks in the wings are already known to arise from unforeseen stresses introduced during the manufacturing process and this has been changed in the last few weeks in order to eliminate these.

Basically the wing is made of a series of ribs (which run front to back) and spars (which run across the span). They then put a skin over the rib-and-spar assembly and stretch it. The problem seems to be occurring where the foot of the rib meets the skin.

Thats what im saying they never will again. It was so massivly expensive to develop and run that tickets barely covered flight cost. Thats why people call a pinnacle a concorde moment because its the very pinnacle that will never be bettered. It was almost the UK and France saying look how big are cocks are when we made it.

Well Concorde was never financially viable, and the crash was merely a good excuse to see the end of it.

However, the Space Shuttle was never financially viable, but they kept that alive. Concorde was a great engineering feat, but the 747 shouldn't be overlooked. That plane revolutionised air travel as we knew it. Bringing mass-transit to the air.

Interesting to note that they were going down the double-decker option for the 747, but they opted for the single, but wider deck for it for reasons of safety and comfort. The Head Engineer of the 747, Joe Sutter, is still a bit perplexed at whether the A380 will be a success or not. I think it will eventually, but don't think it will match the almost 1,500 747's they've built.

The 747 was certainly a successful aircraft, but the march of technology is unstoppable.

I must confess I wouldn't like to fly in an A380 at the moment. A bit like Doctors being neurotic patients.
