About to lose my job, looking to start a new career, any advice please...

9 days straight of which 5 are on strike
Oh it's wonderful! He also told me that on one particular day, 5 planned tasks and objectives for that day had been cancelled, but the team were then given an additional task to complete and they started complaining about being overworked and given too heavy a workload.

Just like the US, if you go with the opinion that you’re special and owed a living, you’re fucked. If you go thinking that you’re willing to work your ass off, you’ll do great
I'm sure that's true, but let's not pretend that's why people move abroad. People aren't moving to Australia because they're desperate to graft for the good of the Australian people, they're moving there because they think it offers them a shortcut to the lifestyle they want, either by being paid more for the same job as the UK, or having a lower cost of living (or other stuff like the weather). And so my point was if it no longer offers those things, you might want to think twice.

People talk about Australia but I met many in London who didn’t want to go back.

It’s never appealed to me for a number of reasons. I think I’d prefer New Zealand or Canada but, in all honesty, I’m happy enough in Britain and will head to South Wales within five years.

My mate works for Northern Rail. Seems like a decent place to work. I’d probably try myself if I ever got made redundant.

Always loads of jobs going. His advice is always, don’t go for one of the really popular jobs like train driver. There’s too many apply and your chances are very slim. Go for something a bit shit looking and once you’ve got in, it’s a lot easier to move up the ladder, than trying to get straight in on a good job.
Just saw a job advertised TransPennine trainee conductor based in Manchester. Maybe they are similar and once you're in other options become available.

Set up your own dog walking business. One of my mates partner has her own business. Works about four hours per day (two walks) has a set of regular clients and absolutely rakes it in. To quote my mate 'Licence to print money with very little hassle'
All you need is your own van.
Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Apologies for the negativity but I'm currently working a dead-end office job on below average pay and about to be made redundant unfortunately but I have a mortgage to pay off and all the usual financial liabilities so would like to retrain doing something as soon as possible so I don't lose my home and ideally something that gets me out of the office.

I don't enjoy working on a computer but would love to do a trade or job that gets me out the office/house and doing something else I suppose. Does anybody have any good suggestions for jobs that fit the bill? I was thinking of going into plumbing but have been warned against it...I'm 29 btw if that's any help living in Manchester?

Maybe look at apprenticeships mate? Get paid to learn a skill.

Some decent ones on there but depends what floats your boat. Mate of mine is a qualified plumber and sparky - he doesn’t go near plumbing work as watee is a complete nightmare - put it like this he prefers getting electric shocks than doing it!!!

Good luck mate, good to see you taking it as an opportunity to get out of something you hate.

I’d have quite liked to make and sell things but I’ve never done it. I have a spring clean every now and again and am amazed at how many people want to buy things I no longer use.
