Academy Pathway to the First Team

Doyle, Delap, Nmecha, Palmer, Bernarbe and Harwood-Bellis have played about 80 minutes of PL & CL football between them. It’s not particularly impressive really. We’re lucky that we’ve had some very easy domestic cup draws over the past few years in which we’ve managed to give some of them gametime.

If there were teams across Europe bringing through kids regularly and winning trophies equally as regularly they’d be questions rightly asked but there isn’t because to get the two is a near miracle.

Liverpool just beat Spurs with two teenagers from their academy starting. And they’ve also given plenty of minutes to another teenager (Neco Williams). Barcelona are giving starts to Ansu Fati and Pedri who have both only just turned 18. Musiala is getting plenty of minutes for Bayern and he’s even younger than Delap.

Bundesliga is not a serous league. barca are complete shite and la liga also easy league right now

dippers are forced due to injuries. we did play delap vs leicester and got battered when he came on

Delap did nothing wrong against Leicester. The rest of the attack was shite, service was pretty much non existent, yet he hit the bar with a great header and was our biggest threat. It was a disasterclass by Mendy, Walker and Garcia in particular

And we beat Liverpool 4-0 four months ago with two academy players in our team. Don't get taken in by the false media narrative. Virtually all the youngsters who have left City have failed to make any impression elsewhere. The jury is out on Sancho who is having a stinker of a season apparently with attitude problems. Tosin may come good at some stage. The rest of them have not been good enough for a top level PL side.
By the way Doyle, Delap, NMecha, Bernabe, and Harwood-Bellis have had plenty of appearances between them and so have Foden and Garcia.

Plenty of excuses there. Surely we aren't blaming Delap for that shit show? The Marseille game was a complete disgrace that he didn't get any of the kids on. We've got one of the most promising players England has produced in years and at 20 the manager seems to be putting little faith in him. He deploys him constantly in a position he's clearly not suited too. In a team struggling for goals he's not given the freedom to go and express himself by being creative. Lose the ball a couple of times and he's off despite the team needing a goal against shite. He's managed him brilliantly though according to the Pep can do no wrong crew.

You think Curtis Jones would be playing if they didn’t have injuries? TAA got his chance through a season ending injury to clyne. Barca are an absolute mess that have to play the kids because of their financial issues and aren’t looking too good for it despite having the best player in the world looking to carry them. Most kids at big clubs get a chance because there’s no other options not because they’re committed to bringing through kids.

Chelsea are probably the best of the top teams in terms of bringing in academy players right now and that’s only because they were in the middle of a big squad overhaul when they were hit with a transfer ban and even now there’s only really 2/3 getting regular minutes.

We’ve had Foden and Garcia play regular first team football over the last 12 months, that’s at the absolute worst on a par with most other trophy hunting clubs

We don’t give those same chances enough though when the opportunity comes... For example, when we have our first team strikers injured we won’t even put our EDS striker on the bench. A guy who is raw for sure, but who has the physicality to play now, has scored a lot of goals for the EDS, scored on his senior debut and hit the bar with a header from a cross on his PL debut. We’ll instead put 3 centre backs on a 7 man bench and wonder why we don’t have anyone to try and grab a goal when we’ve wasted 20 odd shots on goal. Delap seems to have suffered because Pep chased the game against Leicester, left Rodri on his own as a 6 and we got stuffed. That wasn’t Delap’s fault but he hasn’t been seen since. He’d at least be on the bench for those other teams as an only fit striker. He should be on our bench tomorrow if Aguero is out.

Then there’s dead rubber games like Marseille. What do we learn playing Mahrez on the right? We could play Cole Palmer for an hour, because currently our attack is so disfunctional that we should try something different when we can. Or in that game, how about bringing any of the 4 EDS players that were on the bench on when we’re winning. If we’re not going to play them they should’ve played against Tranmere in the Pizza cup to get experience of playing against seasoned pros.

We have done better recently compared to a few years ago but there’s still big room for improvement.

Liverpool don't give much time to the kids. Look at their appearance stats over the last three seasons. Also, only two first teamers were missing the other night ....Van Dijk and Matip

In my eyes, a ridiculous post. Foden will rack up at least thirty appearances this season. He has played 16 times and 1044 minutes so far this year. Pep continually praises him publically and has given him progressively more minutes each season. The clamour for him to be given a bigger role is because he has developed in the way he has, as well as the obvious affinity we have for a local, academy player. Your anger 'Pep can do no wrong crew' is clouding your judgement, in my view, and I have never seen him 'hauled off' for losing a couple of balls.
