Academy players leaving

Yeah but Roman will get a new contract for sure, much inferior players to him have had new deals at the age of 18. He looks set for his first loan spell so the club will get a better idea about him.

I feel for them also but the fact is they are keeping the most promising players from the academy. The problem is that to make our 1st team now you have to be CL/high PL standard or showing early signs of being CL/high PL standard. With all due respect to Cunningham, Mee, Trippier etc, are they really capable of competing in the likes of the CL and are they demonstrating that ability by ripping apart teams in the championship or League 1 on their loans? Guidetti seems to be one of them that is showing his ability, albeit in the Eredvisie - how many others are performing like that?

Look at how many kids the rags & chelsea have brought through who are now 1st teamers in the last 10 years. The pressure is so high now for results we can't afford to keep kids and give them games unless they are truly exceptional. Maybe, given time, we can approach the CC like Arsenal do and the rags (sometimes) - now is not the time to do that when we are trying to make a name for ourselves.

I'm expecting us to see, maybe, 1 graduate from the academy every 2 years from now on (maybe more if we keep buying in all the best kids from europe & UK). It's not to say that the ones that don't make it are bad players, just that they aren't the standard required for the City 1st team. I'm sure loads of them will make a decent living from football, probably quite a few at PL clubs also.

the thing is how do you know that they wont be good enough, there young and players like trippier have barely played have us, the same was said about sturridge, but now look where he is and how good he is, players take time to develop and Im sure well see a few players from our academy playing for the top teams

As in your post as you say their not good enough apart from Sturridge and the less said about him the better.

The coaching staff see these boys day in day out for years. They have a very good idea whether they are of the standard to push on and potentially become a CL quality player.

Well, we have to trust the coaches and management team I'm afraid. They have been doing it a lot of years now and I can think of very few players from top clubs academies who have gone on to be stars elsewhere - the rags are probably the worst for it but they've had a huge academy for years so some are going to slip through e.g. Pique, Rossi.

You don't have to play players in the City side to understand how good they can be - that's what loans are for in most cases. I am sure the loan clubs will be submitting reports on the players and I'm also sure that City scouts and occasionally coaches go to their games to watch them for progress if we think they will make it. I'm sure some mistakes will be made and some future stars will slip through the net, hopefully not many.

With the new squad rules of a maximum of 25, City (and other teams) are extremely limited in offering opportunities for "older" youths whilst maintaining a top class squad of 25. It's pretty much the case now if you have hit 21 and are not 1st team material, or very close to it, City can't afford to use up senior squad slots on someone who "may" be a late developer. In the old days with no maximum squad size we could, now we have to sell them on to finish their career elsewhere.

When you look at the likes of Balotelli, Aguero and other players it is pretty obvious that they have *IT* before the age of 21 and the *IT* is what City and other top clubs are looking for. Think of the X Factor without the bullshit or playing up to the camera's :p

City always wanted to keep Sturridge as I understand it, it was just his wage demands and a (rumoured) falling out with Mark Hughes that meant he walked.

A lot more will follow in the near future too - McGivern, Cunningham, Tse, Smith, Helan, Robinson, Elabdellaoui, Benali, Veseli, Nimely, Razak Nuhu... none of these have any sort of future at the club, most are now over 20 or nearly 20, and not even close to the first team. More than likely more highly regarded players of recent academy history like Weiss, Boyata, and Wabara have very little chance either. Bunn and Roman maybe have some chance but I'm not crossing my fingers. Guidetti, Abu, and Razak are the only ones who look to have a better than 50% chance at this stage out of dozens in the 19-22 age group who have been in the academy.

The U18s look promising but we say that about any generation, it really is impossible to tell until they start going out on loan at senior level. It seems that Suarez and Rekik, who we bought into the academy, are the most well thought of given their early promotion to first team training.

Razak has the biggest chance of making it simply because he has the most experience out of the rest of them. Razak isn't leaving us as he signed a 2 year deal BUT Roman's contract runs out at the end of the season!

Razak has never been and never will be an ex academy player. The fact that the club include him as an academy graduate along with Scapuzzi is embarrassing.

Think City could make better use of the loan system. So many players go out and come back hardly having played. There should be more thought going in to placing players at clubs where they will be well coached and get good match experience.

The odd month at Carlisle doesn't do either club of player much good, imo.

With the new tie-up with Braga coming soon, we'll be sending some of our better kids to Portugal I reckon. We now have good tie-ups with Holland (Feyenoord and NEC), Germany (Eintracht Frankfurt, hopefully they can get promoted this season though to the Bundesliga), Spain (Espanyol), and Portugal (Braga). Do we have a partner club in Italy yet? Torino are top of Serie B and I remember we had some sort of link to them years ago, they look likely to be back in Serie A next year. We could also negotiate first option on their captain, Rolando Bianchi. ;)
