There ISN'T room for the squad with him next season when you consider Pep sets us up with 2 midfielders who stay back primarily, and 2 midfielders who primarily attack (and join to make the 4 man attack), and Wharton is very much in the 2 who stay back mold.

For next season, the options are:

2 Back: Rodri, Nico, Kova, Bernie, + (O Reilly and Lewis as backups)

So for these 2 spots, we have 4 + kinda 2 options. Which is more than good enough. I'd say if one of Bernie and Kova leave, snap up Wharton immediately as he is the best option.

4 Attack: Haaland, Marmoush, Gundogan, Foden, Savinho, Doku, Bobb + (Mcatee if he stays and O Reilly)

Here we have for sure 7 options (since Gundogan is staying) + kinda 2 options again, unclear what's happening with McAtee.

This is where I think it makes sense to bring in Reijnders or Wirtz, since they replace KdB, but also future proof for Gundogan. This would give 8 clear options.

I've not seen him have a poor game. I'm usually cautious with players who come out of nowhere, but this kid has got something. Still seeing the same things I saw from him when he first broke through to suggest he's not a flash in the pan.

He's like a more refined Rice but younger and with more potential. Nico's signing probably puts a stumbling block in the way of him coming here but I'd be puzzled if we go big on another midfielder this summer and were not seriously considering him.

There are many great players whom we have made look average, or worse.
Rumours today of Ederson coming our way mean that I am not sure that we would have room for him, unless another central player goes.

But Gonzales gives us a decent back up if not world class amd will be a good squad player

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this, I thought I was watching a different game than everybody else.

Wharton did break up play on the odd occassion yesterday although he got done a serious amount of times going to press his man and getting done by a ball around the corner and players running off him and he was left in no man's land.

Personally I thought he was bang average yesterday, Eze and Mateta were the usual standouts for Palace they are then main men for them.
