Adam Wharton

Palace have always been good at scouting players. They paid 20m for him so imagine other teams knew about him.
What Palace are good at is giving players an easier step into Premier League life.

They have a good stable team, good fanbase and behind the scenes are pretty solid and consistent.

Wharton, Olise and Eze etc need that platform to be able to grow into the players they are now. Every team would have known all about them but it's no good for City to buy Wharton and either stick him on loan somewhere or just have him playing EDS football for years.

But if as expected we lose Bernardo and Kovacic then we need a midfielder mate? Rodri and Gonzalez are the power and Wharton could be the guile?
Think we probably do but think Anderson is a better fit than Wharton to replace Bernardo, Kovacic hardly needs replacing. Only changes if Rodri doesn’t get his fitness back.
Even then though depends how we intend to set up next season, either Cherki plays right and comes inside in which case we need a right back like Nunes for width and a Bernardo type midfielder (Anderson ). If on thee other hand we buy a winger like Semenyo then Cherki takes up a midfield spot inside with Foden and Rodri or Gonzalez and we need a very different type of midfielder.
Thats all assuming Reijnders doesn’t improve the way most midfielders do improve under Pep.
I don’t expect any decision until spring but lean towards Anderson over Wharton myself.

Don’t get it. Anderson is a level above
I am generally cautious about buying players from middling sides, so before today I would have agreed with you. Same with Anderson…might come good, might just look better than he is playing for a lower-level side. See Kalvin Phillips.

However, I thought Wharton ran the show in the middle of the park today. It might not mean much against our non-existent midfield but if we are looking at our current side, he walks straight into it. The bigger question is, is he good enough, or will he be good enough to stay in our midfield long term? I don’t know the answer but I would take him for the present because he’s fucking miles better than Reijnders and Bernie.

He is a seriously good player, and unless we are super-confident that Rodri will return to peak levels alongside Gonzalez, or that Nico can step in to midfield allowing Ait-Nouri and Mfuni to pick up the LB position, then we should definitely consider him. Reijnders and Bernardo, excellent players both, are out-muscled in those CDM areas.

He is, not that bothered whether we go for Wharton or Anderson think there is little between them to replace Bernardo and Kovacic. Think it’s highly unlikely to happen before the summer though.
