Affinity with West Ham. How did it start?

After the horrendous kicking the club have had and being branded cheats from the media last week it will be interesting to see if there is any reaction from the average football fan, starting this weekend.

Think it was from the last game of the season back in the late 80's we were relegated, they stayed up. The 'ammers all invaded to pitch and marched up to the city end in a whole goading way. We all started singing "we'll meet again, dont know where dont know when..." the atmosphere changed and our relegation party started. They were lining the streets applauding us on the way back up to the tube.... silly fuckers.
This!

My Father was there that day and he said he’d never seen owt like it, one of the most feared sets of Cockney fans giving a load of Mancunians applause in the ground, down the streets, out of flat windows and balconies!

It’s the same reason we get on with Sunderland after they brought 12000 to Maine Road and we relegated them and fans were exchanging scarves and shirts rather than punches after the game.

I think it’s good to have a decent link with other clubs rather than hating everyone.

Although it really is just Sunderland and West Ham we do get on with haha.

All of us hate United n’all. In a pub near Upton Park about a decade ago we were chatting with some Hammers who said “Man U are both of our local rivals aren’t they? It’s swarming with the ****s round East London as well”
And the Sunderland Poznan after their game with the Rags when we won the league is legendary!

87 for me

There were thousands of blues that day and thousands of West ham wishing us all the best instead of the normal ICF giving you a smack

They also have a serious hatred of the Rags and us Spuds

Also both those two teams are nor Billy big bollocks look at me and how big our club is like their local rivals (Newcastle, Spurs, Arsenal) similar to Rags

Both the hammers and Mackems are more grounded, very similar to our support

I've often had a bit of a soft spot for them, met a gang on holiday in Ibiza back in 1990,good lads, and even had a drink and a laugh with them in the old social club at Maine Rd

I've always liked West Ham, and I don't know why. Maybe because they despised them rag bastards? Who knows. I've got a good mate from the East end who was hard at it with the ICF in the 80s. City's always been his 2nd club, so I think it's a two way thing. I know not all City fans like West Ham but I reckon a high percentage like them, or are at least, not bothered about them.

Indeed.

Sunderland fans were proper sound on the weekend of the 2014 League Cup final. Both sets of fans mingling all weekend and not a hint of trouble anywhere
