It will go down as an OG under the rules. As much of the fuss that Hart gets, Howard had an awful game. Btw I think Yaya should be taking PK's. Dzeko has missed his last couple of PK's, and Aguero sold his too easily today.

Previously Sergio has missed exactly how many penalties for City?

sergio would have banged in the rebound if it hadnt hit howard anyway!
That may have been interesting, as if the ref hadn't realised that Howard had got the faintest of touches to push it onto the post, then he could very well have disallowed the goal as happened with Peter Reid at Elland Road 20 or so years ago.

It was an own goal.

There is a decent argument it wasn't.

Aguero's penalty was on target and was heading into the goal. Howard got fingertips to it and turned it onto the post, but not in such a way as to prevent the ball going into the net.

If the ball had gone straight onto the post before hitting Howard and going in it would be an OG because Aguero's shot was not goal-bound, but since the penalty kick would have gone in if left to itself, and Howard failed to keep it out, I think it can be credited to Aguero.

Perhaps. But the final touch, without which there wouldn't have been a goal, was Howard's. I'll be surprised if Kun is given the goal.

Yep, if you have Aguero in your Fantasy Football team, you lost 2 points for the missed penalty too.

I remember this happening in a World Cup game once, and the goal going to Rooney (?) despite actually going in off the back of the goalkeeper.

But do you get 3 points for the assist?

Re: Agueros penalty

It would have been disallowed if it had been in a shoot out. I am always very confident when Aguero steps up to take a penalty but that was a poor effort yesterday.

Good try. But no cigar. Assume for a second that this play was not a penalty but an open play. Aguero beats a man, takes a shot that is parried by Howard onto the post, but unluckily the ball ricochets off the post and hit Coleman in the chest then bubbles back in.

So long as the ball was not heading towards the goal when it hit the defender, it is an own goal. Here Howard had parried the ball onto the post. Had the ball continued on its new trajectory, after hitting the post, it was not going to go in.

If it was a shoot out in a cup game would be given as a miss ?
I believe it would, or rather should now, but I do remember in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico someone scored in those circumstances and the goal was given. As I said I think the rules have been since changed (relatively recently iirc) for shootouts so that as soon as the ball projects away from the goal it is dead.

Happy to be corrected on this.
