Al Hilal (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

Seems our downfall has been the constant chopping and changing, especialy our defence. We need to figure out our strongest 11 sharpish.

Just when we thought that City were back after a solid display vs Juventus.

I'm trying not to take too much out of the Juventus game. If they were in the prem, they would finish around 10th i reckon.

Al Hilal just showed us exactly what happened in a lot of games last season. Wait for City to lose the ball on the edge of their box or for an inevitable shit Doku/ Sav cross and break with numbers and pace against our ridiculously high and slow back 4.

We absolutely need some pace in that back line if we are to persist with this kamikaze halfway line defending. As soon as the ball is turned over we are done. Either that or defend 20 yards deeper and leave Rodri on the toes of the defenders.
You missed out the having 2 of our midfield 3 who have no pace and can’t track runners too.

You may be 50% arsed, but don’t try to speak for “we as fans” just because you don’t care. I’ve been in the USA for the full tournament and I’m 100% arsed that we lost today. I’ve now got to plan something else for 2 weeks before I fly home the day after the final.
Alright appologies many fans were and mamy fans weren't and I have amended my post to say that

Why won't he play Gonzalez? He was one of the best young CDMs in Europe when we signed him. He's looked decent every game he's played for us. I just don't understand playing Gundo who's on his last legs instead of him. This favouritism from Pep to certain players needs to stop its hurting the team.

The state of the goals we've conceded, Genuinely wouldn't see it on a Sunday morning!

Juventus had two chances against us and scored both, Same shit again tonight.

We need to sign a right back and fast, on top of all that I'm pissed off saying for the last 2 years that Ruben Dias is finished his time is up he's absolutely nowhere near good enough, I just wish Pep would start playing Khusanov at centre back alongside Gvardiol.

Also please start playing different fucking wingers!

Big season for this for Pep he needs to stop picking his favourites, it could well do him out of a job. People can say what they like about this CWC calling it "friendlies", Try telling that to Khaldoon! Massive money to be won for the club completely thrown away, let's be honest we should be at least making the final with the side of the draw we were on too. No excuses. Not good enough.

Savinho might be the least impactful player we’ve had in the Pep era - at least the one who plays a decent number of games.
Thought he looked promising, but there is no end product,, cut inside lose ball, cut inside shot blocked, miles off what we need, he has no physicality, most defenders pocket him

Under no circumstances should we ever be losing to a Saudi team full of has-beens. People can spin it however they like but for me this is perhaps the most disappointing result we’ve had over the past year. We had an easy path to the final and completely bottled it. Thought we’d turned a corner but think we’ve got to brace ourselves for more of the same shit served up as last season

Agreed

If we'd lost 1-0 to a spawny goal, then I wouldn't be bothered as much, it happens to many good sides in cup competitions to much lesser sides at some point. Sometimes it just doesn't happen for you on the day.

Going life and death in a 4-3 loss is different. No way teams like this should be putting 4 past us.

Teams don't really fear us now because they know if they hit us quickly on the turnover, they have a hell of a chance of scoring goals.

If we're gonna play the way we play with so many players on the edge of the opponents box, then we better start bringing some pace into defence again so they can make recovery runs, otherwise I don't see what will change.

There's a very clear blueprint on how to really trouble us. Obviously not every team can carry it out and we still have the players to win much more than we lose, but I wouldn't bet on us winning regular trophies and beating the other top sides until we rectify it.

Seems our downfall has been the constant chopping and changing, especialy our defence. We need to figure out our strongest 11 sharpish.
We’ve currently got 18 first team midfielders - need a mass exodus.

Only a couple of seasons ago we were singing.

Ederson and Aki, Walker and Akanji, Ruben Dias, Johnny Stones, best defense in Europe were Manchester City on our way to Istanbul.

How many of the above are still worth a starting place in the team taking into account form, fitness and reliability ?

Good intensity and pace to our play but we were a bit over reliant on Doku doing something and very susceptible to counter attacks
Our defence wasn’t good at all

But we've spent £100m on them.

And we aren't good enough with the old guard. Either way it falls on Peps toes.we cant keep spending fortunes for players to be sat on the bench whilst our older players destroy the season because they can keep the pace and intensity.

Make it make sense.
We are not good enough with our old guard but Al Hilal are good enough with their geriatric players?

Ah the old lets forgot about our past because it didn't happen bollocks.

Yes times have changed but I won't forget where we've come from but these entitled fans are stomping their feet at us getting beat in a competition that is meaningless in my opinion is fucking laughable.

Who said forget about it? You making stuff up?

What has it got to do with now - nearly 30 years later and the club in a completely different position.

Fans are allowed to express anger at losing FFS. You can't just say "oh well.....we were in Division 2 once"

What was they expecting, prime 1970 Brazil?
Don't these fans realise we're still in rebuild mode with new players trying to fit in and new staff trying to find their feet in a team that underperformed big time last season or are these fans thinking it'll be like playing FIFA on Xbox where a couple of clicks and job done.

We have fans now, new fans, who have only known success so all this getting beat isn't in their DNA.
I think maybe, like a lot of us, they were expecting to see something different. Instead, it was a very similar performance that we saw all throughout last season.

Gundogan still getting minutes despite playing with prosthetic legs, Akanji looking like he's won a competition to be there and Ederson conceding every shot on target he faces.

It's not entitlement to want and expect this very expensively assembled squad to beat a Saudi team.

I suppose we should be grateful because 26 years ago we were playing Lincoln
