Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

nomination - tales of grandeur - all the young

bullseye

been waiting for this all year, anthem after anthem

nomination - direction of the heart - simple minds

hit, great return to form

two more nominations.

October drifted away while I toyed with putting this one up, and whether it belongs here. Nothing groundbreaking, basic but decent rock album, bit of a grungey throwback sound here and there.

October Drift - I don't belong anywhere.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead - XI: Bleed Here Now

Catchy name right. One that takes a bit more time but is worth it. Light emo has a go at pink floyd, a bit more complex with some good music once it settles.

Unfortunately 2 of the 3 albums I was looking forward to have been a bit disappointing. But these two are hits for me.
The October Drift album is an OK listen, but it's competent grunge-lite without anything really stand out, so a miss.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead on the other hand was an enjoyable listen. With the usual caveat of "Who puts out a 75 minute album?" and "Where's the editor?", there were some suitable epic tracks in here that were fantastic - music going off in all unexpected directions. Definitely a hit.

I also sampled a few tracks from the new albums by All the Young and Simple Minds and they weren't for me, I'm afraid. As I only listened to three or four tracks from each, I won't mark them as a miss.

I'll be closing nominations on 25th November - 2 weeks tomorrow.

After this point, any new qualifiers from the latest session will be added to those from earlier in the year and we'll have our final voting list - further details tbd.

A late entry but well worth waiting for is Weyes Blood- And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow.

Her Titanic Rising was uncut album of the year a few years ago. Comparisons have been made to Joni Mitchell and Karen Carpenter.

This album is pretty much a bullseye. Also worth checking out is Dry Cleaning- Stumpwork. In some respects more of the same with slight evolution but if you like what they did first time around you will like this.

I've not listened to as many of the nominations as I would have liked but will pay attention to the shortlist. In truth many of those nominated I know wouldn't have been for me. I am though eternally grateful to whoever, Rob I think, that nominated Midlake and to a lesser extent Asteroid No 4 (Psychedelic Casual). Both bands I have explored further and in the case of MIdlake my favourite concert of the year.

Thanks for the heads up on the new Natalie Merling release, her Titanic Rising (2019) album was an absolute banger.

Just a reminder, I'll be closing the initial nominations and bullseye/hits/misses in one week.

As things stand, any album that gets less than two hits or bullseyes will be eliminated. If enough people start adding their name against albums, that may rise to three (unlikely given the last 6 months!)

After this point, we'll have our shortlist and I'll explain what comes next.

I'll throw in Dry Cleanings new album - Stumpwork. For me it's a hit, bordering on bullseye.
I would also like to up my marks for Fontaines D.C and Kurt vile to a bullseye.
Probably short lived but.......

A late nomination and perhaps a bit off the dial for most

Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin: Ali

Although not new music (Vieux is re-recoding songs recodred by his late father Ali) it is a new album

Interesting.

I'm going to go ahead and second this as a hit. Deserves more time, from what I have heard so far, which is about half of it admittedly.
