Alcohol, hints, tips, advice etc.

I couldn’t effectively do my job if my drinking affected my performance in the way you allude to. I regularly compete with really clever people who would take me to pieces and humiliate me in a public setting if I couldn’t adequately perform.

If my drinking affected me professionally in the way you describe, I’d be finished in weeks. I’ve seen it happen to others and it’s brutal.
I wish Mendy would read this post.

That’s because tizer isn’t a drug/stimulant.
Well, yes, but there's nothing like the same sort if widespread joviality and celebrationary language used around other drugs or stimulants either (maybe barring some people with chocolate).

You don't have people happily pronouncing that they are desperate for a hit of smack in polite company. People probably even think twice about telling everyone about their cravings for nicotine these days as even a lot of smokers realise that it's a bit wank being addicted to it and it isn't really something to be pleased about.

The accepted language around booze though and the ease with which talking about not being able to go without it is passed off as normal makes it a lot easier for people to get in trouble with it or con themselves that heavy use doesn't affect their health (mental or physical) on some way.

I doubt you could tell people that you work with that you have or need 3 or 4 lots of anything - a certain food, episodes of The A Team, games of Monopoly, bottles of milk, whatever - every night without fail, without them thinking that you were an oddball. You probably wouldn't even admit it because you know they would. But booze has different rules and is discussed, in my opinion, dangerously differently.

There certainly was in the social groups I thought as part of in my 20’s.

I understand your point though yes. It does have different rules and it fucking deserves them.

Yeah, and that'll possibly always be the case. You weren't going in to work and casually telling Doris the secretary that you always have a couple of Es every night after work just to relax though.

No I have always managed to maintain a certain professional savoir faire over the years.

I do a 32 mile bike ride now on weekdays as I've found it's been great for my physical and mental health since I retired (doing a little consultancy at the minute but largely a man of leisure).

I've been going at 6 am recently as it's taking me around 2 hours as a maximum and I've seen loads of wildlife...

Today I saw Pheasants, Moorhens, Ducks, a squirrel and even a black cat crossed my path. As I got to the Blue Bridge at Queensferry I saw a guy drinking the dregs from a large bottle of Captain Morgan Rum... He looked at my bike like I was an alien who'd landed from outer space which I put down the drink even though the bike is quite funky... What a sad sight he was at 07:40 in the morning... I hope I never end up like that (largely teetotal at the minute)

Here's the bike... He'll probably need another bottle after seeing it

I took up bike riding these last few years...yeah, it's so good for mind and body. When i get home from a 30 mile bike ride, it's like a real high! You get to see so much too....

How much did the promotion of alcopops to kids in the 90s influence the levels of problem drinking in adults today?
They should do what they did with tobacco and stop promoting alcohol and gambling. Un-glamourise it all.
I'm all for people choosing what they want...but we don't need shit pushing on us.

It is brilliant… I look forward to every ride now which is only down to my determination … it’s so easy to say “nah, I won’t bother today”

We’re away for a week on a “Staycation” cruise at the end of the month so I’ll have to get on a recumbent gym bike onboard and keep the legs working
