Alcohol, hints, tips, advice etc.

It is brilliant… I look forward to every ride now which is only down to my determination … it’s so easy to say “nah, I won’t bother today”

We’re away for a week on a “Staycation” cruise at the end of the month so I’ll have to get on a recumbent gym bike onboard and keep the legs working
Even after a long break, it doesn't take much to get the legs back to normal after a few rides. I caught a train up to Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire last year with the misses and daughter and our bikes with the aim of riding back to Manchester along the canal. It's about 30 miles. The misses and daughter got to the next station and jumped on the train home!! I managed it though...it's a great ride. Some good countryside. Until you get back into Manchester at Ancoats!! Gangs of youths off their heads all around the canal.

Do you remember the advert for White Lightning? They tried to make it trendy and appealing to young people by showing lots of party people having a good time with it haha. Like some ironic comedy sketch.
It's for alcoholics on benefits!! Good of those alcohol companies to think of the poorer alcoholics, wasn't it?
When I worked in substance misuse services we used to refer to it as Quite Frightening.

Every night in BAOR!
Oh indeed, and weekends were a blur. I was a devotee of the 'yellow handbag' I went back to where I was based three years ago and bought a couple of bottles of Herforder, the handbag itself is no more, I was amazed by how tasteless it was.

As some contributors to this thread know, at the moment I am presently attempting to detox from alcohol. However, it's not going well this time around. I have not relapsed but am still experiencing episodes of moderate sweating, nausea, and slight tremors on the back of even mild physical exertion, after six days of complete abstention. For example, these symptoms kick-in if I walk more than 200 yards.

Have been like this since Wednesday.

In the past, I have been right as rain after five days, but this time I have plateaued, and I have been left wondering whether it is unusual to have these symptoms persist for so long or whether this is par for the course.

Not looking for specific medical advice here. Will be able to get that first thing tomorrow.

Just thought that anyone reading this who has been through alcohol withdrawal themselves (or is in possession of a better knowledge than I have about what detoxing entails), might have something to say when it comes to how my experience compares to theirs.

Try to maintain a decent food intake (I know it can be difficult), and also stay hydrated. You need to detoxify your body gently. Keeping your energy/vitamin/minerals topped up will certainly help you. Try to get a bit of light exercise, but don't overdo it at this stage. Just enough to kick start your body into cleaning itself up a bit.

Thanks Trevor Morley’s Tache.

My appetite is variable but have been eating two meals a day and taking vitamin supplements that include a fair bit of thiamine.

Have also been out walking but that’s proven to be difficult because it provokes the sweating and nausea.

Maybe age is a factor here (I am 59) but my main concern is the persistence of the symptoms I mentioned. Don’t feel any different today to how I did on Wednesday. Even had a mild night sweat last night.

Am also wondering whether some kind of kindling effect might be at work too, given that I have previously engaged in several episodes of prolonged binge drinking already this year.

The only good thing is that I am not craving alcohol at this point.

As I get older I can very much take or leave alchohol. Odd class of wine and maybe a bottle of beer when fancy it but drinking pint after pint? No thanks.

Those symptoms are pretty typical of alcohol withdrawal. They will pass eventually, but it depends on many factors. Everyone is different. Don't worry too much. Just wait and see what advice you get tomorrow. In the meantime if it gets worse call 111.
