Aleix Garcia

What should we expect for his playing time this season? Mostly EDS with the odd senior call up here and there? I would think by next season he'll be a squad player

We should bump this thread. Already a star on the ball and generally when we have the possession. I guess he needs to learn positional defensive stuff and things like that, but that's basically Pep's expertive. The absolute dream would be if he could become the same sort of asset as Busquets is to Barcelona, who was of course integrated to the first team by the man himself.

I think he could be more like Kroos than Busquets. The crispness of his passing, his passing range, his more creative moments are certainly more like Kroos than Busquets. He played incredibly deep for the EDS, practically in between the CB's, which was very reminiscent of Busquets, but i'm not sure he's got that instinctive defensive stuff to play as the 1 man in front of the defence - maybe Pep can coach that into him.

Definitely think he should be in the first team squad.

He was definitely lacking in his play without the ball when he first signed & a bit 'airy fairy' but I thought he was actually quite tough & strong in Pelle's hopeless wide open formation v Chelsea, so wheras he may never be Busquets or Alonso, he might still turn out to be better defensively than Kroos for example.

love this player. looked so calm in his passing from his first pass yesterday, when lots of others didn't. when we have possession of the ball, he gets himself in lots of space to offer a passing option like Kroos does. as he doesn't possess pace like Kante, maybe he needs to position himself when we have the ball closer to the opposition midfielders or number 10 to give himself a chance of being within a few yards if the ball is turned over. he has the passing ability to operate in tighter spaces, and he could pass a charging defender or midfielder out of the game.

just a thought, anyway hopefully we get to see him develop next season

Plenty to learn, definitely, but if someone watching that game had never seen City before & you told them he was 28 & had been in the team for years, they wouldn't find any reason to think you were lying.

You are right, his playing style and distribution is definitely more Kroos-like, but as you pointed out, so far we only saw him play as a deep-lying midfielder, though he went quite far the pitch before our goal. :) I guess I made the Busquets comparison solely for the reason that the centre of the midfield is 'everything' for Pep, yet he was brave enough to get one of his 'own' youngsters immediately into his Barca side.

I said on the Tosin thread that our academy players are so much more comfortable playing how Pep expects our team to. They've been doing it for years because it's been the MO of our academy sides to keep the ball and press. I thought he looked comfortable amongst the senior players. He also played the excellent through ball which led to our goal. If he can establish himself in the midfield pulling the strings as he did then he's got more of a Kroos about him possibly than a Busquets.

We're setting high standards for players though. They don't need to emulate others, they just need to keep developing and establishing themselves playing how Pep wants them to and doing what they do best and they'll then potentially be worthy first team players. Kroos and Busquets are names we mention frequently because of Pep's admiration of them. Alcantara is different to Kroos but Pep loved him. You can have different variations of these players and they can be equally effective. With Gundogan in the side we have that midfield maestro and players like Aleix Garcia can help compliment their roles in the side.
