Alex Grimaldo

Benfica have signed Gremio left-back Marcelo Hermes on a pre-contract to replace Álex Grimaldo, who could join Manchester City. [O Jogo]

Don't know much about him but the fee looks like a joke if he changed hands for such a small amount so recently.

Why?

The club can't buy every young player in the world when they are dirt cheap, if he's the LB Pep wants and thinks is good enough to justify the fee, I doesn't matter.

If Pep wants him, lock him up. Fullbacks and CBs are our biggest area of obvious talent deficiencies. We tried the inverted FB look and our guys couldn't do it, they don't play that style, while most don't, we need some that can. Even if we play four at the back our guys are not world class (anymore). We need serious improvement at the back and hopefully this is the first domino to fall.

Benfica signed Marcelo Hermes to a 5 year deal according to various Brazilian reports,January transfer.

But on Grimaldo: Barca fans wish they kept him because of his talent and could probably use him now. They would've probably put an even crazier tag on him. One that got away.

is he any good?
i watch him on youtube, i see nothing special, except for his freekick.
read at barca forum, seems they don't regret much about his departing.
wish for reliable fullback who can play in the first eleven.
not try and error type.

Manchester City are expected to wait before making any more approaches for Alejandro Grimaldo from Benfica. [A Bola] via @Sport_Witness
Grimaldo, who has a release clause of €60m, underwent surgery for an abdominal injury which has been troubling him since October. [A Bola]

He may be good on the ball, but I hope we sign fullbacks that won't be abused in the air when defending corners or crosses.

Barcelona have Alba, Mascherano, Roberto and Pique as a back four. They rarely concede from corners. It's about being organised.

If Grimaldo is the target then I'm confident he'll be more than adequate. Only issue is hit fitness.

City have intensified contacts with Benfica about a deal for left-back Álex Grimaldo (21), who would cost €35m. [Correio da Manhã]

yes,good player.

Absolutely, he's a perfect Pep LB and would be ideal for us. Has been my pick in the position, along with Juan Bernat, for ages.

Bit sceptical about this report given our prioritising Mendy and Bertrand, but would make a great fallback option ;)

Anyone think we just trying to put pressure on Monaco-Mendy talks?

Grimaldo has a €60m release clause but could be sold for around €35m. Barcelona have also shown interest in signing him. [Correio da Manhã]

IMO it's yes and no. They're trying to pressure Monaco to hurry the fuck up BUT if the deal finally can't go through I really believe City will go for Grimaldo. But if they can Mendy I think Mendy will be the one.

Slightly off topic but i thought Bertrand looked the far more accomplished full back vs Walker in the Scotland game, very good on the ball and better positioning to

Can't disagree with that. Walker looked like, well Walker.

And on the strength of today's U20 final which used video replays, Walker was very lucky not to concede a pen.

Cheers mate....my only concern with Grimaldo is that he's only 5ft 6 and doesnt look strong or good in the air! Can see him getting beat alot at the back post. Ideally, Mendy would be the better option..taller, stronger, more powerful and just as quick.
