Left backs are funny old creatures. Never enough good ones around. I think you are being harsh on Clichy. Wasn't the best last season but wasn't help by whoever was playing left centre back. Can still do a good job imo. I also thought Kolorov was brill the other night with Sterling helping him. Same will apply to Gael.

Performance against Bayern last year (1st leg) was one of the most impressive full-back performances I saw last year. Quick look at CL stats and he averaged more tackles, interceptions and key passes per game than either of our left-backs in the competition.

Not scared to make a hell of a lot of rash tackles/fouls either.

Kurzawa would be the better option. 2 years younger in which to develop and the better option in my eyes.

For me, Kolarov offers a lot more than Gael. They are both poor defensively but Kolarov in effective when he gets forward.

Yes I agree in an attacking way. Just think both will benefit from having Streling/KDB ( when they switch ) in front of them

Clichy is HG though, I would imagine its Kolarov who gets the chop if we decide to bring in new LB.

Honestly, I think people overrate our lefbacks to crazy levels. Kolarov can cross the ball brilliantly and maybe once a season will stick a freekick in, but other than that he is a poor player. Defensively he is terrible, if anyone ever attacks down his side we are in trouble, but not only does he not do his job well he makes the LCB's job incredibly difficult as they have to cover for him.

Then we have Clichy, who is a complete non-entity going forwards 95% of the time and defensively is barely average. He's played to be the more solid option, but that's more a criticism of Kolarov than a compliment to Clichy, as he cannot be relied on at all to defend. He frequently goes to sleep and lets people in behind him. He goes through patches of being decent, but then goes through patches of being a complete liability, he's nowhere near consistent enough to be considered the reliable one.

Neither of them are good enough for a side that wants to be doing well in the CL. They are the serious weakness in our side and teams target them and take advantage.

Okay, but what does Clichy offer? He can't attack, he can't defend.

One of the poorest players at the club.

He's prone to the odd absolute rinsing granted and he's frustratingly shite as soon as he steps over the halfway line but he can defend. There's not many fullbacks that can nowadays but he's one of them. He's one of the best 1 v 1 defenders around, he's classed as HG which makes him invaluable in our squad and again, over the last few years he's often had 2/3 men to contend with on his own. With Sterling there now instead of Silva i expect both left backs to be slightly better this season. Unless we're buying world class or world class potential, we won't be replacing our left backs, it's just not worth the money or risk.

I agree with this. Gaya and Sandro are levels ahead of them. We should be looking at youth who are excellent going forwards and backwards.
