Alex Williams MBE – Announces retirement (p4)

Alex is retiring in August after 33 years at City. Nice article in the MEN about him. Wishing him all the best in his retirement. An absolute gentleman.

I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Alex twice, the first time we were both on a speed awareness course in Carrington , the second at a home game a couple of years ago when I was enjoying hospitality with my son. On both occasions he was happy to chat and was a perfect gentleman. Enjoy your retirement Alex but keep an eye on the speedo

I'm sorry he's retiring in the sense that he's a lifelong Blue, who's steeped in the club and fully understands what it's about. Frankly, the more such people we have in and around the club as it expands globally, the better, and the loss of one is a blow.

But how can we begrudge him the opportunity to enjoy a well-earned retirement after the service he's given? He was a fine player for us, and might have achieved much more had his career not been regrettably cut short. Since he stopped playing, he's worked magnificently, embodying everything we should want our club to be about.

Thanks for everything, Alex. Don't be a stranger, but make sure you enjoy all the opportunities that retirement will offer you.

Will never forget the shit he faced at Leeds, Pompey and West Ham.
Especially West Ham. We lost 4-1 and had Hartford and Bond sent off and the game was simply target practice for the Hammers.
Having saved a penalty and kept the score down to four, Alex received a standing ovation from the Hammers fans, many who had been seig hailing and monkey chanting earlier in the game.

Good luck in your retirement Alex, truly deserved and hope City give him a great send off and that he continues to be a club embasador on match days
