So have I got this right? We nicked all the vaccine, so India wasn't getting any including the ones made there, and Johnson didn't put India on the red list because he wanted to do a visit to get a trade deal, and instead we imported a new strain that means that despite nicking all the vaccines the risk of removing more restrictions is greater than it might have been if we had shared more vaccine with the developing world (and with the EU who we gazumped while the EU may now allow fully-vaccinated people to travel freely within the EU).

You forgot to mention that France is closing its borders to the UK from tomorrow ....... just to isolate 17.4 million racists

India deaths per million 230
UK deaths per million 1907

Most of the funding for the Oxford research (going back many years) came from overseas governments. "We" came late to seeing it as a good idea.

Look, I don't have time to research all the (demographic) data right now, but you can't just post those figures without some context.

Covid-19 is a disease that hits the oldest the hardest. It also goes after obese people severely, too.

Due to being one of the richest countries in the world, probably top-ten or thereabouts, we have a lot of old people and a lot of obese people and even worse a lot of old and obese people. We have a very dense population, London is a global hub and a total lockdown on the model of Australia or New Zealand was never really feasible, especially with continental Europe a 22 mile dinghy ride away.

When this pandemic first came to light my worry was for Africa, I thought - omg, they are going to suffer from this (like with AIDs), but we hardly here about any trouble in Africa - why?
Well what is average life expectancy in say Nigeria, for example, compared to the UK? I shall tell you: in 2018 it was 54 years there compared to 82 here. Hence we hardly hear of any corona surges from countries on that continent.

What about India.... well life expectancy: 69 (in 2018) so 15 better than Nigeria, but still 13 worse than the UK and therein lies the full story behind your abrupt response of:

India deaths per million 230
UK deaths per million 1907

Because as I am trying to explain, there are complex reasons for these figures and you are not comparing like with like on a level playing field. But some people just can't stop criticising this Government and covid data such as this, is ammunition, to do that. Except, when you look into it more deeply, its blank ammunition.

We have new, well fairly recent, member from Tory Central. Didn't know our little old message board warranted intervention from head office. Welcome. Your still the Nasty Party.

Just a gentle reminder ... the average life span of a male in the UK WAS 82... until the Tories took power ... now its going backwards and is now 78.7 years (thanks to Tory rule). I would also mention that the increase in average life span was more to do with NHS rather than the party that constantly tries to destroy it.

Unless you are totally thick ... we are an island (close to France .. a fact that some Tory ministers were totally unaware of) It was quite within our capabilities to close down as New Zealand and Australia did. But hey .... Conservatives.

Your first worry was Africa? You voted for a party that has just introduced a reduction in overseas aid by between 50% and 70%. The only worry you might have had was if you had investments over there.

I am enjoying watching someone repeatedly try and deflect from the story and/or defend Johnsons action and falling flat on his/her face every time. Masy as well set up another spook account to agree with the posts and try and make them look reasonable.......

First of all, thank you for an update on the data, as I said, I didn't have time to research the most up-to-date demographic info tonight. However, my point still stands - when Vic typed: India deaths per million 230 & UK deaths per million 1907, I was putting forth a plausible explanation as to the disparity. Covid targets older people (& the obese) apparently the average age of death from Corona in the UK is 83, so above your figure of 78.7 and significantly above India's (2018) average life expectancy of 69. I don't know if its totally correct, but you can see that it is feasible to compare life expectancy, even the GDP of a country, when looking at and comparing deaths per million from the virus.

On the border issue, I'm sorry, but respectfully, I disagree. Can I put the same question to you as I put to 'The futures blue!' yesterday - perhaps you might attempt to anwser it, as he/she didn't: I acknowledge we are an island and it should have given us an advantage during a global pandemic but then I saw the boats arriving on the south coast - many more than ever before and I thought, this is hopeless. Do you think we should have a) just pushed them back to France or b) got the navy to sink them OR c) something else, not resulting in their illegal entry into the Uk during a pandemic emergency.... I will let you suggest something for c).

P.S. the reduction in the %GDP for the foreign aid budget was the correct call when the pandemic hit. Charity begins at home. When there are no homeless people in the Uk they can make massive contributions abroad, but until then, I think even with the reduction, its too much.

oh ..... sorry i failed to pick up that you were blaming refugees . (there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant until their application for asylum has been heard- something that the tories seem to be capable of implementing but hey ho)

do you think that the navy should sink them ... with the 1 nuclear sub we are capable of putting to sea at any one time... or maybe the 4 destroyers we have ? ,,, possibly the two aircraft carriers that have next to no aircraft (after the tories sold our Harrier Jumpjets to the yanks for £110,000,000)

or maybe we should put the smallest army since Napoleonic times (80,000 and decreasing) to guard our shores

your choice .... you voted for them after all .

So typical, you are twisting my words.....

I did not blame refugees per se, but other people told me we should have shut the borders (like Australia/New Zealand) and I pointed out that last year I was all for that. Then in the summer, when I saw thousands coming on boats from France, I thought: well this isn't working.

I have asked the question what should we have done about that - I am not suggesting sinking them, that was typed to make a point. But I am highlighting that we didn't close the borders, we couldn't and until sombody gives me a plausible solution for how we deal with this - because its nearly summer again & we will have the same problem once more - my point stands.

Would you like to say how you would have stopped the asylum seekers coming from France, instead of asking me what I would do.

Just because you may have voted for a party that is ok with open-borders (in 2019) doesn't cut it when there is a pandemic the following year and it is ongoing and the borders need to be secured.

So nothing to say about people flying in from here there and everywhere 'untraced', just people in dinghies? Interesting choice of username.
