Are the things that make us 'Great' great because lots of us deem them to be 'Great'?

If so, patriotism seems a bit arbitrary to me. For example, if the Muslim conspiracy theorists are eventually proved right, then at some time in the future our fair country will eventually embrace an especially egregious form of of sharia law. Wouldn't this development then still have be seen as something 'Great' because a majority would consider it to be so, the realization of their utopian dreams?

On the other hand, is something 'Great' because it conforms to some kind of independent standard?

For example, should we applaud the existence of democracy, the NHS and the possibility of free speech as 'Great' things because they are expressions of what we might call 'fairness' or 'justice'?

If so, why do we need to bother with patriotism? It doesn't seem to me to be as fundamental as the two values I have just mentioned. So surely we can bypass it.

Patriotism is therefore either random or redundant, optional at best.

Do let us know which of those two choices you personally favour at some point.
