Jack Straw is perhaps the perfect blairite, more so than Mandelson, perhaps even more so than Blair himself. He came, he went, that's it.

What amazes me, not, is he waited until he decided not to stand for re-election before making his comments. Does that make him a closet racist and if so is that worse than one that’s come out. With all the PC that’s around nowadays we need someone to come out with a scientific definition that we can all refer to. Perhaps a scientific table which by testing we can determine what level we are personally at. When we get to an uncomfortable level, (to be determined by the PC Brigade), we can refer ourselves for re-training. A bit like that Union guy who is Corbyn’s matey who self referred after his derogatory comments on the Jews.

I think hes a very intelligent bloke and everything he does is calculated. Like previous posters have said he ruffles up his hair before he goes out in public, for some reason this buffoon image has served him very well in the eyes of the british public.

Seems to treat political life as an extension of the Bullingdon Club of which he was once infamously a member. Unprincipled, machiavellian and utterly self-serving - and those are some of his better qualities.

Why are they so much less likely to be on jail?

Perhaps not Islamophobic as such, but it's incredibly crass language from a senior politician. As someone else mentioned though, Johnson is not stupid so this probably wasn't a gaff on his behalf. Didn't he meet with Steve Bannon recently? I'm sure there's no correlation between the two events...

You know being liberal and left are not exclusively the same, yet on here and the robinson thread thread you bring out the tropes of the modern far right that somehow the left are championing some liberal agenda shutting down peoples rights and free speech while protecting islam, and it's a load of bollocks mate.

One thing the right are doing well at the moment is owning a narrative of saving free speech while attacking book shops and abusing minorites all egged on by the likes of bannon and Johnson getting away with spouting their shite unchallenged by our media.

As for FGM as you claim you cannot talk about it without being called racist, we have several safeguarding sessions at work where the main topic is FGM and it is openly discussed, wirh staff and students no one is beating down our door at work demanding we stop or that we are racist, when parent come round there are several infomation areas mentioning it no one has made a complaint.

We.know in some communities there are issues, but tarring and demonising a whole religion on the mindset of the extremist element is not gonna solve the problems only enhance them.

Crass yes from a man of his standing and he is a man who chooses his words very wisely to suit his narrative, not sure if his meeting with Steve Bannon held any sway as I’m sure his stance (and the vast majority of the British public) about the burqa has been the same for quite some time

The world has definitely gone mad. What is a “safeguarding session”. Is it another word for brainwashing.12 Years at school 3 years at Technical College 4 years at Uni never had one. How have I survived all these years. I honestly believe half the problems in the world are caused by people making a big issue out an issue that wasn’t a problem in the first place.
