Surely a General Election has to be called asap when a new leader is in place as they wouldn't have a mandate from the public?
A new PM's mandate to be there is derived from the majority in their seat. That buys them a ticket to ride the MP Gravy Train. His/her Party wins a mandate by dint of getting enough other MP's elected to form a Govt and that mandate is based upon their manifesto pledges. I'd say only if a new leader comes in and announces they have a different manifesto to that upon which they were all elected on need they then go to the country.
Thats how it works in this parliamentary system - your conclusion alludes to a presidential style one which we do not have.
