It just beggars belief that someone who is paid to uphold the law actually made this statement in the first place. By all means, think what you want in private but to be stupid enough to put that sh*t on line means you should never be allowed anywhere near firearms ever again. Unfortunately, this is the USA, and peoples safety from nutters like this is less important than someone's 2nd Amendment rights.

And he was a veteran on the force - not some newly passed out kid who has a sudden surge of power to the head - he probably was in line for promotion and I'd bet has a lot of support in his community

I'm not saying law enforcement officers should not have guns, or indeed anyone else for that matter. I'm saying that there should be more stringent checks as to who should be allowed to carry firearms. The guy in this case is clearly not fit to carry a gun, and has been rightly relieved of his duties as a police officer. I'm pretty sure he hasn't been asked to hand over his firearms though.Huh!
