I just knew Arsenal weren't competent enough to get a good replacement with so little time left.

So now it will be down to straight cash with no replacement, I can still see them just doing it in the end.

I'm not so sure. In an ordinary transfer window and with level headed protagonists, maybe. Unfortunately so incompetent has Arsenal's handling of this window been, and so deluded has Wenger become, that a demented attempt at a perceived 'face save' by hanging on to a player, who will be pissed off beyond belief, wouldn't surprise me in the least.
I've no great love for Arsenal, but I feel for you as a fellow football fan. We had 20 years of penniless fuckwittery under Peter Swales, but in the modern era the way your club is being run is downright embarrassing
