All New Police in England and Wales Must Have Degrees

By talking to them.

And if they have a degree also, even better. Those points raised about other qualities will still be judged at interview stage, but the fact they also have a degree with gives the police more confidence they can analyse data, research online cyber crime, follow records, piece evidence together etc.,

Which is probably a very alien concept to most social media addicted kids these days.

Police college isnt an easy ride btw,and some may find this hard to believe.......however,without above average intelligence,a good standard of education and at least some common sense.....you wont pass the current course.

Being streetwise, trusting gut instinct, and maybe even having a touch of the criminal mind, does indeed make a much better Bobby IMO.

When they did this with the nurses in came graduates and basic nursing skills went out of the window, even now the standard of basic nurse skills is awful

I read an article last year which spoke about the NHS funding empathy skill courses for new qualified nurses.

Why on earth would you employ someone in the role of care who has no empathy? It's common sense.

Madness isn't it,we left school and learnt on the job, hands on from the start and matrons to whip us into shape
When i was in hospital with multiple injuries i used to get a bowl of water plonked in front of me and told to do my best to wash,in my day everyone got thorough washes, beds made etc hands on nursing care,it makes all the difference

The old bedside manner is becoming a forgotten art, maybe in part due to the increased workload/stress....... but i also think its because of a lack of social skills/common sense. This is something that affects the NHS in its entirety IME.

I completely agree. I trained 75-78 and we learnt on the job, apprentice style. I still cannot understand why that system was changed, although a few at the top of the profession had, for years, a desire to show that they were 'as good as Doctors'. As far as I was concerned Nurses and Medics were different, but equally valued...

How about this for an idea?

Instead of a degree, they should have common sense and some life experience and pass tests that show they have a real passion for public service and wanting to genuinely help the public.

Fucking degree to be a copper!

I quite like the idea of our police officers being educated to degree level. It must be galling to get arrested by someone who has failed their GCSE's.
