All New Police in England and Wales Must Have Degrees

How about this for an idea?

Instead of a degree, they should have common sense and some life experience and pass tests that show they have a real passion for public service and wanting to genuinely help the public.

Fucking degree to be a copper!

So something along the lines of an apprenticeship with 80 percent on the job and 20 in the classroom learning about legalities, ethics etc?

Or we allow them to recruit from all sections of society, not just those with degrees and accept that a modern day police service that purports to represent all of society does just that by employing officers from all walks of society.

I couldn't give 2 shits if the officer im dealing with has a degree or not, i care about his ability to do his job with empathy, common sense, required skill set and most of all, pride.

If that officer is straight out of university with a degree, great but if its someone who has come to the job in middle life, wanting to be the best officer they can be and with a passion to serve but eh oh, they left school with no qualifications but have a CV full of work and experience, then also great.

Its actually hilarious seeing the Police who fall over themselves to be seen as divers and inclusive effectively sticking the fingers up at thousands who would love to be a police officer but are now told tough, you dont have a degree, we dont want you.

They are not alone, the work place is full of employers who now want a degree for a job that for years hasn't needed one but all of a sudden, yep, no degree, no job.

They're talking about bringing in a degree as part of police training I think, not hiring a load of arts graduates.

What they are doing is saving money. Instead of the police force paying for training of officers, they are now going to get the applicant into £thousands of pounds of debt.

It will put off so many that genuinely want to be a police officer and attract many that have a degree but no job and no real desire to serve but fuck it, ive got a debt to pay!

The policy is to want a degree already in place before the application is accepted but a small amount may be accepted given the apprenticeship.

Its a joke.

@Magicpole is it true that Sturgeon is bringing in a Scottish version where all the new police have to have a conviction?

It's always been that way. I failed to be selected because of one rash but brilliant alibi.

Wasn't thinking ahead.

All our chief constables are serial killers.

Almost as if the employment market was in cahoots with the government and academic institutions to push grossly overpriced and unnecessary qualifications on the populace to increase selectivity, promote segregation through financial means, shackle workers with the millstone of debt and fudge the unemployment figures? Or should I fetch the tin foil?

When they did this with the nurses in came graduates and basic nursing skills went out of the window, even now the standard of basic nurse skills is awful
i don't think you can tarnish everybody with with the same brush my wife is a nurse and has been for the last 30 years she is very dedicated and very skilful BELIVE me if she's on a long day she gets up at 5 in the morning and does not return home until after 10 pm sometimes still with her packed lunch as it's been that busy she has not had time for a break.

You need to read the proposals. How I have read it The Police ar not closing down applications to people without degrees but are offering apprenticeships and training people to degree level.

If anything they are offering all walks of society the opportunity to improve themselves to gain a degree, something which may not be financially available to them.

They are wanting the vast majority of applicants to already have a degree and they will accept a small minority onto a apprenticeship.

I've read it, i can read.

Its to save money and has fuck all to do with making the service better.
