You know what? Mick might, just might, improve this. That's how bad it isA 1? Mick Hucknell on it?
And American Beauty was apparently recorded in and around the time that Garcia was working with CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane et al down in San Fran on Bluemoons favourite album - Dave Crosby's If I could only remember my name............Just FYI — as stated, I am no Dead fan, but for those of you “expecting” something, this record does a poor job of reflecting the “sound” of the GD. Try American Beauty (1970) instead.
There are some very strange tunes on this record. As my wife said, “You don’t listen to their records, you listen to their songs.” The GD are far and away pop music’s ultimate mix-tape/live bootleg band.
And definitely “prog” is not them. They’re hippies.
Without even hearing it, I'm claiming that that is too harsh.......... ;-)You know what? Mick might, just might, improve this. That's how bad it is
they seemed a bunch of misfits on stage, but there musicianship is very good.
interesting band, especially with their devoted cult like following.
That may turn out to be a rash claim my friend ....:-)Without even hearing it, I'm claiming that that is too harsh.......... ;-)
Fucking hell BH where's the advanced warning - my kids could have been present!!!!!!
Where do I sign up.........Their musicianship is superb and this album really is not very representative of what they were about. For a start off this album was heavily influenced by producer Keith Olsen - they mostly produced themselves - who was primarily an AOR /hard rock producer (he co-produced Whitesnake's 1987 hair metal monster) and had just produced Fleetwood Mac by... All the orchestration on the title track was down to him.
Estimated Prophet is a really good track and Passenger - inspired by a Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - is a fine Stonesy rocker. The title track is interesting and bequtifully played and recorded.
The Dead though are a live band who specialised in improvisation. It won't be a lot of peoples thing but something like the triple cd "Pacific NorthWest '73 - '74: Believe it if You Need it" is a much better representation of the band. "The Very Best of The Grateful Dead" is a good intro to (mainly) their studio work, which is quite varied but Foggy is right, they ain't Prog.
Peace, love and cookie dough.
