An Evening with Gazza

I think that could cut either way. Yes he possibly would have better care and guidance nowadays, but equally his flaws may have stopped him getting to the top earlier - can't see a teenage gazza progressing in our academy.

Just about every midfield/forward in our academy now has the talent that Gazza had. He just stood out a mile at the time because his game was more about technique, dribbling and passing than it was about stamina, commitment and tackling, which was rare in England back then.

I think in terms of raw talent he was up there. Obviously the injury wrecked him so we never seen him truly reach his potential, but he was still a very good player in patches.

His trauma started when he took his mates little brother to the shop and he ended up getting knocked down and killed by an ice cream van, that he blamed himself for. He also seen another friend died in an accident on his Uncles building site. He had nightmares, developed a stutter and a tic, and started having convulsions and his OCD started, so was having therapy for it all, football was seen as his escape from reality even at an early age.

Horrific waste of an incredible natural talent.

I hate the way people look up to fools like this, he is a piss head who has been given so many chances to "start again" , yet he blows it each and every time.

Just amazed that he is still with us.
This. It’s only a matter of time before he goes the way of Maradona and Best.

Last night at Edgeley Park. He put on a decent show

No doubt he wasted a chunk of his talent but for me the best ever english player.

Whos yours ?
Definitely not Paul Gascogne!!!!

My best ever English player? Duncan Edwards.
He never got the chance to show how great he really could have been but boy was he good.
It still breaks my heart to think of his death.

As a player with genuine talent, I agree probably the best English player I have ever seen, although as a midfielder with all round ability, it takes something to take away from Colin Bell, that great man had everything. Of course I’m only talking about on the football pitch here, not personalities.

It wasn’t just the booze and his demons that did him. His greatest asset was his incredible acceleration to get away from players with the ball at his feet, and those two injuries - the one on Gary Charles and the other for Lazio stole that part of his game from him when he should have been in his prime. The fact he played for Rangers and Middlesbrough from the age of 28-33 supports this.

Neither was i. Pure talent, up there. Traits as a man, shite

Couldn’t think of anything worse, a horrible waster and an alcoholic wife beater to boot. Now give me the opportunity to listen to a proper gentlemen like Vincent Kompany and I’m all in
At one of our away games at Norwich a few years ago and I was chatting to half a dozen Spurs fans who were staying the night all suited up.

They were proper fucked off as Gazza had a sportsman's dinner down there but he'd cancelled early afternoon as he was off his face.

Very good player in his day but it wasn't often enough to be deemed anything like a great. Scorer a lovely goal against the Scots.

Pampered too by the media which didn't help him & should have been sent off while on the stretcher at that FAC semi.

Had immense talent but failed to deliver consistently or long enough to be considered a great player. Can real off a number who you could argue were as talented but again failed to fully deliver on the promise , Kinkladze being one , Paulo Futre (who did actually win things), George Best (went to see him play as a kid but he never turned up). Think as a country we also missed out on exploiting the talents of Hoddle and Le Tissier at international level. Much prefer those who maxed out what they had , Keegan being an example , Kane another. Just hope Foden , Saka and Bellingham stay focused on the football.

I thought Le Tissier did play for England, or was it just the B team?
He did get capped but less than double figures. Ironically it was Hoddle who last looked at him and dropped him from the world cup squad after he had hit a hat trick for the B team. He was incredibly laid back and maybe just lacked a bit of fire in his belly. Doubt he ever got nervous about a game which is why he was so good at penalties, or maybe they both had a conversation and could not decide who had the strangest views.
