Rest In Peace. Very sad news.
The band were a product.of their time and have become a timeless.band ever since.I didn't think I'd give that much of a shit about Andy Rourke but I am very saddened by this. Can't stop listening to his ludicrously talented play on Barbarism Begins At Home, Well I Wonder, Rubber Ring, There Is A Light... etc.
It's occurred to me that he might be Manchester's best ever bass player.
If I feel like this about Andy Rourke, I reckon I'll need a couple of weeks of compassionate leave when Johnny Marr kicks the bucket, which hopefully won't be for a very, very long time.
Saw my 14 year old grand daughter for the first time in 3 years (due to lock down/ covid) in February. We'd talked on zoom but other than how are you doing etc we didn't get into too much depth. The amount of national coverage Andy's death has received tells you that, whatever their detractors may think, The Smiths are one of our most culturally significant bands. Not just for one generation either. My 15 year old walked through the door yesterday and didn't even mention his exams, it was simply how gutted he was by the news as were a number of his school mates and their teachers.
