Andy Rourke RIP

I didn't think I'd give that much of a shit about Andy Rourke but I am very saddened by this. Can't stop listening to his ludicrously talented play on Barbarism Begins At Home, Well I Wonder, Rubber Ring, There Is A Light... etc.

It's occurred to me that he might be Manchester's best ever bass player.

If I feel like this about Andy Rourke, I reckon I'll need a couple of weeks of compassionate leave when Johnny Marr kicks the bucket, which hopefully won't be for a very, very long time.
The band were a product.of their time and have become a timeless.band ever since.

It's ridiculous to think that their biggest attended gig in England (Glastonbury apart) would have been at GMEX for the Festival of the 10th Summer - which wasn't their own exclusive gig. I don't even think that sold out!

Four years later James, The Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and 808 State were all selling out GMEX on their own!

Yet had they ever done a reunion tour they'd have filled City's ground as often as the Roses did. Fans would have travelled from.all over the world.

Selfishly I'm glad they never did have the craved for reunion. I saw them 5 times and can always remember that with love. I know those a little younger who are huge fans wanted that chance to see them so fully understand.
I had a day of travelling yesterday from Tampa to Los Angeles for a music festival today so wasn't able to spend the day yesterday blasting out Smiths tunes and I'm out all day today...... I'm home Tuesday and will listen to Andy's bass playing then.......

Loving seeing so much love for Andy and for the greatest band of my generation.
Fuck it. Everybody's generation

The amount of national coverage Andy's death has received tells you that, whatever their detractors may think, The Smiths are one of our most culturally significant bands. Not just for one generation either. My 15 year old walked through the door yesterday and didn't even mention his exams, it was simply how gutted he was by the news as were a number of his school mates and their teachers.

Saw my 14 year old grand daughter for the first time in 3 years (due to lock down/ covid) in February. We'd talked on zoom but other than how are you doing etc we didn't get into too much depth.
But when I met her she had a Nirvana shirt on. I asked her what other music she liked and she came out with a few bands and then said The Smiths. My heart boomed! I hadn't promoted it or anything.
I asked her what her favourite songs were and she said This Charming Man and There is a light.....
I kept my calm. Didn't want to overwhelm her with "play this" etc etc.
Just simply said she had a great taste in music and keep listening.
Really made.my day.
