Anna Connell

Are we sure the first game was 12 a side, or were City the inventors of the substitute rule.
Great thread.

Great thread.

It was definitely 12 on the pitch per side. The reason seems to be that Macclesfield Baptist arrived with 12 players, so both sides played with 12 to ensure everyone got a game. Football in 1880 was organised much like a typical street/park game.

Come on Gary, fiddle with the facts. I have heard that other historians do it and not a million miles from where we are.

One of the best thread on here... read it a year ago and today... so illuminating... thanks to all that contributed!!!

It seems likely, though her age doesn't appear to tie up. She was supposed to be 46 in 1901 when she was living with her sister.

What this shows though is that census information only gives us a snapshot position of one year, not hard facts of what a person was doing throughout the decade.

I've been trying to debunk the myth about Anna's direct involvement in creating a football team - all evidence suggests she did not - because a lot of it is based on supposition, myth, desire for a story etc.

The facts are that the football team evolved out of the cricket team which we now have evidence to show existed in the mid 1870s, possibly even the late 1860s (research continues). Anna's men's meetings came after the cricket team became a fully functioning organisation and, the current research suggests she wasn't even in Manchester at the time the sports club became established (she was working near Preston as a Governess, which ties in with the information suggested by the 1911 census).

Anyone who read my recent article for the MCFC programme will see the evidence etc.

My updated "Manchester A Football History" tries to debunk the myth further - it's out tomorrow (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.manchesterfootball.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.manchesterfootball.org</a> or <a class="postlink" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/James-Ward-Publishing/266700661882" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.facebook.com/pages/James-War ... 6700661882</a> ).

Gary, did you have any luck tracing William Beastow and Thomas Goodbehere?

I have obituaries and census information on them. Goodbehere's involvement now appears minimal, but Beastow remained actively involved for most of the 1880s. He presented the first known kit (1884) and he went on to be a Manchester councillor and hold lots of other roles.

Great articles and I agree it would be great if her name went on sometjing to do with the club i.e. the trining ground would be good rather than just "Carrington" - thats the same as utds.

AND:

"black shirts with a white cross".

Fantastic away shirt idea !! We'd look like a proper set of warriors in that!

I dont think the Sheikh and Khaldoon would be too happy with a Maltese Cross on any of our kits.

I will let you all figure it out for yourselves ;-)
