Another new Brexit thread

Surely a rejoin movement is legitimate? Leavers got their way after 40 years of campaigning. So why not?

It’s legitimate, but from an EU and Europe perspective, the UK being out has benefited the EU.

It’s unlikely the Covid relief package with the EU raising money on the markets in its own right for the first time, would have happened. The Investment agreement with China signed yesterday may have not happened given the Hong Kong situation.

There is no appetite in Europe for the UK to rejoin, nor much goodwill. Parking the UK to one side and managing a relationship through the new deal and continual ongoing negotiations is seen as a better option. For the Federalists in Europe it also tilts the scales in their favour making closer cooperation and integration easier.

Of more immediate concern for the UK is the health of our own Union, which currently is not in great shape.

Or lobby the Biden admin to ease them. Biden wants to re-engage with the EU and has already prioritised links with Paris and Berlin over London.

A lot of the Biden team are from the Obama days and they haven’t forgotten or forgiven Johnson’s ’part Kenyan‘ dig.
Yes, I'd imagine Biden has been quietly biding his time and synchronising his run for president with Boris's tenure for this very purpose. It's uncanny how you have such insight on the priorities of us foreign policy bob - do you have 'someone on the inside'?

The problem with rejoining is that all the Brexiteer scare stories about further integration, getting embroiled with bailouts and any number of other things are much more likely to happen as a rejoining nation than if we had not left in the first place. That’s because we would most likely be forced to join on their terms with the Euro and no opt outs. I said years ago that leaving would be more likely to make us more integrated in the long term and I see no reason to change that view.

Hopefully Brexit will be a roaring success and we won’t need to go cap in hand to rejoin. Signs aren’t good so far though as more details of the deal become clear and when the implications of all the extra red tape on the economy start to be realised next year I suspect there will be a push for rejoining the SM and CU before too long, probably via EFTA/EEA initially then ultimately by rejoining.

Of course. Should be interesting watching them explain how giving up sovereignty, control of borders, laws and economics will benefit us. Not forgetting, of course, that new members are obliged to give up their currency (and therefore any control of the economy) and join the success that is the €

I imagine most on that side of the debate will think the next couple of years will make the argument for them.

All of the things you talk of there come at a cost of increased bureaucracy and reduction in competitive advantage. That won’t impact a lot of people directly for a while unless they work for a company that trades or has to deal regularly with the EU. For those that to do, the next stages are all going to be about how do we start to reduce those barriers again - the pendulum is essentially now just set in motion much like it is with domestic politics and it’ll be forever in motion.

Yes, I can't see us rejoining, but in the long term, with a different government I could see EFTA/EEA membership, with maybe some stopping off points between that and where we are starting out from tomorrow. Maybe we'll level up with N.Ireland as a first step at some point.

No, unless you call reading interviews with members of the Biden team ‘having someone on the inside.’

This unique insight I have also allows me to see Biden calling Johnson a ‘physical and emotional clone‘ of Trump in 2019.

I recommend reading as a way of broadening your knowledge and understanding of the world. I find it very helpful.

Flourishing Rejoining party here - I might join..

Just looked on their forum and it has this disclaimer on the banner:
We don't have much to reply to yet, so it may feel a little empty in here, but the only way we can fix that is if people like you help us by posting a thread or two and replying to a few others. We've got big plans for the forum, and it will help us to grow the FB group as well as our presence across other social media.

Ouch.
