Applauding the opposition goalkeeper

I used to sit in the North Stand in the early 90s.

every game unless it was some dickhead or United the away goalie would run towards his goal to start the game in front the stand, applaud the crowd and get the full stand applauding him back.

if it was an england keeper (say Nigel Martyn) it would be twice as enthusiastic.

appreciate that every player was british back then but wtf happened? when did football become a cesspit of blind hatred and does anyone remember when it stopped
When they started to take 40 seconds over every goalkick?

Fans rarely applaud ex-players of their own club nowadays let alone opposition players. Everyone has a reason to now to dislike someone usually by manipulating their words to justify their hate or finding some innocuous comments from the depths of time.

If you look at a lot of old games from the mid-70s and earlier it wasn’t uncommon for an away goal to be met with applause from the home fans, if it was any good.
Very true, my dad started taking me to City as a young kid mid 70's and we used to sit in the North Stand, the opposition keeper nearly always got a round of applause as he approached the goal, which in return would be acknowledged by the keeper.

I remember being at an opposition ground and when our keeper acknowledged their applause they all at once started doing the Vs.
Or at Leeds when they applauded Alex Williams and when he waved back they donated fresh fruit for Alex to give to a local food bank…….
Very charitable of those community minded Tykes and I’m sure the local food banks around Maine Road appreciated the donated bananas.
I think he was awarded a coconut at Portsmouth. You don’t see that these days….
