Aquariums

Not had a tank for several years......do miss it, and as part of the doing up the living dining rooms, may be on the cards to get a new one. Always admired marine, but don't know if I can manage them....anyone here got marine? Are they really that much more difficult to sustain?

Used to go to huge aquatic shop over in Bolton B.A.S.....still there? Also Aquaria, a small but well stocked shop on Hollinwood Ave in Moston.....was run by a couple.....but I swear to this day the 'wife' was a bloke, in a Haley Cropper kinda way.....knowledgable people though.

mine is tropical, and my bro's in marine.
you need to spend time in 1st few weeks setting it up, but after that it is pretty east to look after. once i have finished uni and have my own place fink i will be changing to marine.

look on a website called ultimate reef i think its called and it will give you all the help you need

Don't mention fish tanks - I still get the shivers when I think about my experience!

My ex-sister in law had a tank and equipment they didn't use so said we could have it. She came round and we set it up in an alcove in the dining room. It needed 24 hours to settle she said so she left it and we arranged ot go out for fish the next day.

What I didn't realise was that the alcove had a false floor and it was OK for the empty tank but wasn't sturdy enough for the full tank. A bit later I was stood admiring it and thinking how nice to would look with fish in when I heard a crack, the false floor gave way and gallons of water poured over my dining room carpet as the tank smashed over the table.

Ha,suppose it would have been worse if you'd already got the fish in .
Have a smallish tank at moment with just goldfish in but want to upgrade perhaps next year when I'll have a bit more time and money to invest.

I'd recommend 'The Abyss'. They are by far my favourite aquatic shop. They have recently moved into a massive warehouse in Stockport and they have a fantastic selection of marine, tropical, tanks, plants and accessories. The owners are a nice bunch of people. Normal people with the know how. They are certainly not the fish geeks that talk down to the beginner!

Try and avoid places like pets at home. They tend to be over priced and the advice that they give (that I've had in the past) is normally minimal. The staff at 'The Abyss' have stepped in many a time to help me out with my tank problems because fish can be such sensitive creatures!

Also, watch out whilst lurking on aquatic forums. They tend to be full of clicks. It is 'alleged' that those people that run these forums take backhanded donations from their favourite fish shops (well those that give them generous discounts for expensive fish) to advertised and/or big them up in discussions and threads.

Been to Abyss a few times, infact i bought my tank from there, the only thing is they don't have many cichlids. I went to the aquarium at cockfields farm on lees road between Ashton and Oldham yesterday. It was class. Loads of tropical and marine and good prices too.
At the moment i've got about a dozen malawi's (mainly mbunas), a firemouth, a texan, 2 eye-biters, a victorian, 3 catfish (a plec, a syno and a pictus) and about 16 yellow lab babies about an inch long.
