We have a top-quality first XI which can compete with anyone in the world.
We have good squad depth in most positions, with 4 quality strikers, 4 quality advanced midfielders and wingers, and enough depth at full back (seriously, who do Barca and Bayern have as back up full backs? Are they better than ours? If they are it is marginal)
Our main problem is an astronomical lack of depth in the two key areas: central midfield and centre-back.
We have 1 quality CB in VK and 2 quality CMs in Ferna and Yaya.
This is embarrassing compared to Real Madrid, Bayern and Barca. Can you imagine Rodwell and Garcia being back-up for any of those?
We are lucky enough to have the shell of a team who will win the Champions League over the next 3 or 4 years.
Add 1 elite level CB such as Ramos or Mangala and watch Nastasic develop into an elite level CB next season.
Add 2 elite level central midfielders such as Pogba and Fernando and we have a squad capable of winning a vast amount of silverware.
Look at this as a matchday squad:
Hart, Pants: 2 players
3 of Kolarov, Clichy, Richards and Zab: 3 players
Kompany, Mangala and Nastasic: 3 players
Yaya, Ferna, Pogba, Fernando: 4 players
3 of Silva, Nasri, Milner, Navas: 3 players
3 of Aguero, Dzeko, Negredo, Jovetic: 3 players
Total - 18 quality players with three not selected/ injured/ suspended. The remaining 4 (to make up the 25) can be hungry young talent such as Lopes.
How much will this cost?
Sell Garcia and Rodwell = £18m
Sell Demi and Lescott = £2m
Income = £20
Sign Mangala = £30m
Sign Fernando (who I hear has a cheap clause in his contract?!) = £10m
Sign Pogba (or alternative cheaper elite young talent) = £30m
Outgoings = £70m
Total = £50m expenditure.
For £50m we will then have an outstanding squad capable of winning everything. A squad which can be slowly improved and augmented by talented young footballers: selling Milner and Clichy and signing Shaw and Barkley, for example.
Thankfully, I should think Sorriano and Txiki understand this, and aren't flapping on Bluemoon!
