Are you religious?

Read recently that 96% of the worlds population believe in a deity of some sort. Not judging anyone, you're entitled to believe in whatever you like.

Was suprised it's that high.

Discuss ...

Lack of adequate education throughout the world. Pure and simple. Very similar to the lack of power that women have in most patriarchal societies, pure lack of education. We could still do with quite a bit more here, let a lone Inner Mongolia.

I think there's a difference between believing in the possibility of a higher power and being religious.

I am absolutely not religious in any way shape or form. No 'Abrahamic' god can possibly exist in my opinion.

That said, I see no reason why a 'non-interfering' deity can't exist. By that I mean, a higher power who is a creator and nothing more, simply a catalyst for all that came afterwards. You can't pray to it and it doesn't set rules for you to live by, it just 'is'. You could say 'god' in that sense is just a metaphor for something more scientific such as the quantum fluctuation which caused the big bang. Or maybe just a thing that lives outside of our every day experience, in which case we can't possibly judge it.

I'm not saying I think that this is the case, but I would say that as long as there's a small chance of it being possible then we mere mortals can never be absolutely sure.

So you're saying you believe in physics? Do we bow down to Brownian motion? No, but welcome to the science party! Believe what you can see and can be proved not what someone tells you must be true because it was written in just the one book by nutters living in caves! :-)

Depends what's meant by religious, by religion.

Do I believe in the Abrahamic god, Zeus, Jupiter, Thor or any of the other deities? No, that's for children's minds.

Do I know what the cosmos is and how it came about? No, like everyone else, I don't know because I can't know because the answer is, at the least, at the very edge of our experience and most probably outside our possible experience. Can an ant know the value of a twenty pence coin?

Nevertheless the cosmos, and everything in it including myself, exists, at least in my mind, so there must be some moving force that brought everything into being. Even if we exist in a Matrix, something created the Matrix, and something created the creator of the Matrix.

Think I'll just lie down now.

No, discussion over..............but seriously not that surprised about the figure; even though it cannot be completely accurate, as most of the more populated countries have very high levels of believers compared to here, like India, America, China and Russia etc.....still mostly religious
