The biggest shame is the accuracy of the bible itself as an historical document
If the apocryphal gospels (of which it is rumoured to be as many as 20) had been included they may have given people a clearer insight into what really happened. Unfortunatly the Catholic church at the time had to doctor the bible to suit its own ends, so it could survive as a religion.

The Bible is a book that was written several thousand years ago to present the powers that be with a vehicle for control of the populace. On that basis it adds little or nothing to the debate as to whether there is a force that our tiny minds cannot comprehend.
Also, I have tried on a few occasions to read small sections of The Bible, as I wanted to buy in to the whole "it's actually a great book with some timeless stories" thing and I have to say that it is fucking boring. I usually tried this when I was staying in a hotel and there was a Gideon Bible in the draw. After five minutes of reading about how angry god was I was usually so bored out of my mind that I went down to the bar and got absolutely hammered. I'm not sure how that chain of events fits in to the idea that The Bible can save you from committing sin, but I'm sure that someone much more informed than me on the subject will explain that little dichotomy.
You commented on the Bible being a: "convoluted mess of self-contradicting shite" and the general thrust of my post was in agreement with that. I fail to see how my post was in any way a non sequitur. I was merely trying to use your point and expand upon it. I'm sorry if that was a bit left field for you.
