i've never seen this god fella that people keep going on about so no,when i die i'll find out what its all about so until that day i'll worry about something worth worrying about like how i'm gonna put food on the table for my kids etc, religious nutters do my head in how they tell you how to live your life, bollox i'll live my life how i like whilst you freaks fiddle with kids or whatever else you do
Why is it when religion and individuals faith is discussed on here, the majority of those who disagree tend to generalise to extremes?
sorry if i'm generalising mate but most of the Jews,Muslims and Christians i have discussed religion with end up nodding at me with some kind of knowing smug little smirk on their faces as if to say 'oh how misguided you are none believer',so the general consensus in my opinion is most of the people i know who mistakenly believe in something called god are idiots, poor misguided idiots with some hidden agenda, probably done something really bad in their past but its ok god forgives them,i've done things in the past that would make you're hair curl but its ok coz i forgive myself n life goes on! i don't need to turn to some fictious character called god

It might not be representative of religion per se. It IS representative of how flawed the concept is when you consider how people use it to suit their own agenda which they do time after time. Many people complain about people being brainwashed into religion. To me thats bollocks. People are brainwashed by INTERPRETATIONS of religion which serve to further the aspirations of one or many individuals with a vested interest. That vested interest could be anything from money to power to political/social/sexual dominance. The mainstream religions are just as guilty as their hardline offshoots.

I would actually agree with you to some extent but feel it's difficult for people of faith to have any control over that small minority who do exploit and manipulate in the name of God. Religion is so big and powerful that it's a natural attraction for people with less honest motivations to be greedy and firmly believe that they would do this with another organisation should Christianity or Islam never have existed.

I think there's a difference between believing in the possibility of a higher power and being religious.

I am absolutely not religious in any way shape or form. No 'Abrahamic' god can possibly exist in my opinion.

That said, I see no reason why a 'non-interfering' deity can't exist. By that I mean, a higher power who is a creator and nothing more, simply a catalyst for all that came afterwards. You can't pray to it and it doesn't set rules for you to live by, it just 'is'. You could say 'god' in that sense is just a metaphor for something more scientific such as the quantum fluctuation which caused the big bang. Or maybe just a thing that lives outside of our every day experience, in which case we can't possibly judge it.

I'm not saying I think that this is the case, but I would say that as long as there's a small chance of it being possible then we mere mortals can never be absolutely sure.

I would say this sums up my position on the subject. The universe is far too vast and unknowable (if that's a word) for us to completely dismiss the possibility of there being a 'force' out there, but I am of the view that human constructs like religion will have absolutely no bearing on the answer to the question.

Moreover I always struggle with the concept of life after death. I don't understand why that concept has to go hand in hand with religion. I think it is a ridiculous and illogical notion irrespective of whether there's a god or not and religious people's slavish adherence to this absurd concept merely serves to undermine the rest of their argument.

I choose to eat bacon, not go the synagogue/mosque/church/tabernacle/hall, i choose to see my wifes hair/face in public, i choose to not put my children at the mercy of someone who would like to rape and defile them, i choose to not hate someone who doesn't believe in the same beliefs as me, i choose not to make an old ex hitler youth my fucking hero, i choose booze, i chose sex before marriage, i choose to live my life exactly how i want to, i chose not to marry someone my parents told me to, i choose not to live my life according to some book that someone wrote a while ago that is full of untruths and fairy stories about seas being parted and water into wine.

I CHOOSE to believe in dinosaurs, i CHOOSE the big bang.

Thank you please.

The Bible is a convoluted mess of self-contradicting shite, but a loving tolerant version is no more valid than a hateful one. It just depends how you cherry pick. Most people reject the more hateful strands and so most churches will naturally adapt to that because they want followers.

Every word in The Bible is no more or less important than the one before it although I'll concede some words are more important than others. The followers themselves will also have read these words indepently. It's all down to interpretation and within a fair context. Different Church denominations exist because people have different requirements and backgrounds. Everyone is still reading from the same book and for the same reasons.
