My boy joined the Irish Guards last may after going to the recruiting office in Manchester. My advice is to be clear about what you want to do and set about it properly. No half measures. No "I'll do it if my mate does it". Train properly and commit to it because once you're there it is up to you and you are on your own. Some people you'll like and others you won't. All workplaces are the same but in the army you can't get away from those you don't.

Having said that, if you're made of the right material you'll do things the rest of us can only dream of and other men will look at you with respect. My boy's off to Afghanistan in the Autumn right onto the front line at Sangin. I truly wish I could go with him to watch his back but he's on his own now.
