Exactly, that's the entire basis of my original thought; but is that fair? Does he really warrant that higher level of criticism because he's a reputedly better player?
It's the entire reason why he's the scapegoat. Our expectations of him are inaccurate and clearly by this point unrealistic.
I don't doubt his lack of effort is anywhere near acceptable. But then I realise how the media and public opinion work, and how they've unfairly targeted players of our own like Sterling, Stones, Hart, Bravo etc. And then how it destroys their confidence, which negatively affects their performances and it subsequently perpetuates the stereotypes attributed to them. Which in turn dooms the cycle to continue.
I see that with Ozil, remember he got vocally upset at the level of criticism he got. So it's clearly got to him. Playing for Wenger's Arsenal can't help.
I personally just don't want to be part of the cabal that unnecessarily destroys players. He's not at fault, be he doesn't deserve to be the poster boy of Arsenal's failings.
