Arsenal (A) | Community Shield | Post-match Thread

Can’t lie I am disappointed by that loss. Mainly because I feel we could have really dealt a psychological blow to arsenal today by winning. Their celebrations reflect that and I have no problem with them tbh. They have finally beaten us and that will be used to galvanise them for the coming season. They will have a very similar season to last year points wise imo.

From our perspective I don’t think it will really affect us tbh. I am slightly concerned with haaland (no goals in 6 now I believe). Have teams worked out a way to negate his threat? Guess time will tell. If he isn’t scoring he doesn’t really offer much else , his link up play is still pretty poor and I feel at times it It’s like we are playing with 10 men. Grealish as usual did the bare minimum (expect more than just keeping the ball and passing sideways from an 100m player) and I thought foden was an improvement on the left wing.

Straight off at Rodris miss, you know what's coming, media as a whole will be the same, fu*k em. As others have stated this will their only silverware this year.
No matter how well they play the Tarquins will want Lego heads neck on the block unless they have a successful season, and no matter how over excited they are today, it will count for little next May.

Should really have gone 2-0 up. Then game over. Phil misses those with regularity. The ‘no look’ shot… have a look and you might see huge gaps either side of the keeper to roll it into, rather than straight at him. Apart from that he and KDB looked decent together

Haaland terrible today, offered nothing
Grealish very poor
Alvarez never hit the levels I expected
Odegaard best player on pitch by a country mile
shame Foden never started

City won the treble
Palmer took his goal very well
Good to see Kev back
No fresh injuries
It’s only a friendly

Good propaganda for Arteta that pen win other us just so he can tell his players they just beat the treble winners the best team in europe! They have an easy start next week at home and think theyll be challenging again!

Think Pep has got some thinking to do about who become the mainstays this season. It's shit, but one of Grealish, Foden or Alvarez are going to be in and out; I don't see any scenario where all three get regular game time.

The perils of having a great squad, I guess.

The only thing that bothers me from today is that Foden didn’t start. It’s giving bad vibes for the season ahead. Could be that I’m reading too much into it, but he’s an absolutely key player this season as far as I’m concerned.
Maybe it’s just because it was a friendly

Mate, cheer up. These players just won the fucking treble. I'd say they're pretty good.

We have not replaced 2 big players who scored goals. That’s my worry.

We don’t look ready for the season & we can’t afford to give the others too much

We are not stronger than last season we are weaker esp on the goal front but after a treble it’s what I expected.

Transitional season in my opinion
I’d say a transitional season(s) is when you make huge changes, we haven’t done that and are still early in our fitness due to a very, very long season that led to a Treble, including our first CL.

Today was nothing more than a friendly and although we wanted to win, certain things led to a loss.

We may go on to win something, we may go on to lose, just try to enjoy a Treble winning team trying to achieve such a magnificent achievement, on the trot.

And for those complaining re added time. I was at chesterfield watching dorking wanderers yesterday and there was 7 mins added on first half 14 in the second half. The new time keeping is frankly pathetic.

They're really trying to Americanise football with this new stoppage time nonsense, anything for added drama, its ok for international tournaments but for league games where ref bias is so rife you can bet it'll be abused.

Thought Palmer's goal was worthy of winning the game, disappointing not to win it for the fans that travelled, Phil should have scored that chance, definitely needs to work on his finishing, missed a similar chance againts Inter.

Im sure we'll see a better performance in the super cup final, we move.

What is our overall record in Charity Shields? I can genuinely only remember winning 2?
In the PL era we have won it 3 times (2012, 2018, 2019).

We have lost five times (2011, 2014, 2021, 2022, 2023).

Over the last 12 years, only one team that has won the Community Shield has gone on to win the league (us in 2018/19).

This is going to sound abit silly.
But I can see this loss having a positive impact on the players going forward for the new season. They would have been still (and quite rightly) still in party mode from the treble.
Well now it’s time for the boys to wake up and this has hopefully lit a fire in the lads to go in and do it all again!!

Come on city!

Can’t argue that. It showed a couple of things, even at half cooked we controlled the game against a very giddy Arsenal side and fan base.
However the result will(if needed) spur us on. These lads don’t like leaving the field 2nd best.
It will have been a good work out as much mentally as physically..

The defence looks sharp and solid. Rodri, Kovacic and Bernardo looked ready. Foden looked excellent when he came on.

Not to call the lad at all, but in tight tense games, Alvarez isn’t ready to play the 10.
